Fights between 2 average fighters more exciting then those between skillful boxers?

Take Brian Minto vs. Vinnie Maddalone both fighters are nowhere near being on the p4p lists, both have some pretty shitty defense but they produced one of the best heavyweight fights in recent years

then on the other hand you have guys like Mayweather, Jones, etc who have all the masterful skill but rarely ever have a memorable entertaining fight.

What is it about those who have shortcomings in the ring putting on exciting fights?

It's cos boxing is all about hitting the opponent and not getting hit back.....the top guys have the ability more often than not to avoid being caught up in brawls and getting tagged too often and so their skills dictate how a fight goes.

Lesser fighters are more sucsiptible to being hit a lot and when you put two mediocre but game guys in the ring it brings excitement.

To me, Calzaghe-Kessler was an excellent fight to watch whereas Froch-Pascal was a little wild at times.

I thought the Calzaghe Kessler fight was great in both action and skill.

However, in response to the thread:

    Gomez/Arthur

I've long held the opinion that it does not take great fighters to make a great fight. It takes good matchmaking. A fairly recent example might be McKart/Marquez. We had two older guys well past their best fighting above their best weight. Very evenly matched, they fought to a draw.

I agree up to a point but at the same time its not always the case. For example 2 fighters with great boxing ability (hit and not get hit), Taylor (technical boxer) vs Pavlik produced a great fight , both are technical guys

Neither Taylor nor Pavlik are 'technical guys'. Taylor has never been unhittable, and Pavlik is as far from technical as I can think of.

Pavlik is a straight-forward guy who throws straight punches rather than wild hooks. The man is a brawler, his defence is poor.

Two average guys who had a great fight? Gatti vs. Ward.

But it's even better when two superstars live up to the hype. I.E Barrera vs. Morales 1

two B- to C+ type fighters equaled to fight of the year.

Vasquez and Marquez are both top ten pfp fighters and any of their fights are FOTY material. Pac/Marquez is another example of high level excitment.

    the answer is no.

good post. though vazquez and marquez are not as slick as floyd, they are on top of the food chain as far as skills is concerned and offered a very exciting trilogy not just a single fight. pac-marquez also did the same with their chessmatch during the rematch. it doesn't matter if they are higly-skilled or not to produce a great fight, what matters is if they are equally matched.

being a technical fighter doesn't mean you don't get hit too.

just answering what you've posted - the skillset morales and barrera have are much higher than what gatti or ward ever had.

but if my mates asked me to show them a fight that would convert them to boxing i'd show them gatti-ward 1 without a thought.
