There's been plenty of discussions about fights in oppressive heat (Maxim vs Robinson and The Thrilla in Manila being the most notable examples) but are there any fights that are well known for taking place in very cold weather? It looked a bit nippy during Ali vs Norton III. Also, would punches hurt more in cold conditions?
Do you know what the temperature was? That fight stands out for me as indisputable proof against anyone who claims Lewis is the greatest heavyweight ever. Any boxer who is losing on points to Bruno should never be spoken of in those terms!
Bowe-Holyfield II ... the fan man fight. I remember both guys being bundled with blankets during the break and putting on stocking caps.
Ray Leonard had to be bundled up in between rounds during Leonard vs Duran 3: http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Sugar_Ray_Leonard_vs._Roberto_Duran_(3rd_meeting)
I know Patterson - Ellis was fought outdoors in Sweden. Don't know the temp, but I recall a picture of Patterson and Ellis in close and Patterson's breath was visible.
hagler v finnegan? Cant remember if it was 1 or 2 (think it may have been 1) but it wasnt fimed as the tv crew couldnt get to the venue to set up and weather had been real bad with snow and ****. Also i think it was postponed too due to the weather.
I went, it was in the centre of the City in September (1st Oct actually), so not THAT cold), what annoyed was the rain. As for the fight, among the crowd, I do not know anyone who really thought Bruno was going to win at any point up to the stoppage. Maybe if had continued to have success for a couple more rounds, the buzz might have started. Another Bruno fight that was cold though was Bruno/Bugner.
When Johnny Tapia fought Willy Salazar on the undercard of Ruelas vs Nelson, he had trouble warming up in the ring because it was cold. It was an outdoor show in Indio, which is in the desert, but the desert gets cold at night in December.
