Fights in recent memory where the unified Champion fought a true N1 Contender?

All I can think of is Jermain Taylor vs Kelly Pavlik.

What other fights has there been recently amongst Boxing's splintered titled divisions, where a unified or atleast concensus Champion, has fought his undoubtedly number one contender?

    :huh

I know it's a while back, but could you consider Winky fighting Mosley as a possible answer?
    Zab v Floyd?
I'm just guessing. Not answering with any confidence or authority and happy to be corrected.:good
    Or Zab v Tszyu?

Was Floyd already the consensus next best welterweight when Baldomir fought him?

    Cotto - Margarito?

Floyd had retired if I re-call, so Cotto was concensus number one.

Good shout, IIRC was around the time of Pac-Diaz so he was still at LW?

If I remember rightly, either Casamayor or Juan Diaz was Lightweight king when Pac moved up. Diaz was nothing more than a belt holder at that point? :huh

My point is that Boxing is so fractured, we don't really get Champion vs number one contender fights anymore.

Number one contender is a phrase that has more relevance in the WWE:-(

No, I meant that the point of Margarito-Cotto Pac wasn't a player at Welterweight.

Sorry, no sir he was at Lightweight fighting Diaz. Mayweather retired and the debate was out of Pacquaio and Calzaghe P4P. Floyd retired, Cotto lost to Margo who next fought Mosley in Jan of 09, Pacquaio fought DLH in December 08.
