"It’s good for a fight that takes place in Macau," Arum said. "If it takes place out of the U.S., that’s an automatic 40-50 percent reduction. There is no ESPN around the clock, not all the media is involved. In the U.S., that fight does 700-800,000 buys. This goes back to ancient times. The worst performing fight in the Ali-Frazier trilogy was the Thrilla in Manila because it took place outside the country. Even the Ali-Foreman fight didn’t perform that well in closed circuit in the U.S. People say, 'Well why are you doing it?' It’s because of the tremendous amount that we make in China."

bottom line why arum and pac fight once a year in china is they make more money

so the reality is pac and arum do not care about the numbers of the algieri fight because of the amount of money they make in china

    I don't believe this.

    - they still go on tours to different cities
    - get interviewed by various members of the media
    - still see advertising on tv and newspapers
    - they fought early in the morning to accommodate American audiences

It's simple, the fight was trash

    This.
Bob arum is in damage control, plain and simple.
Also this fight did 250k, not 400 like bob says/lies about.

I'm sorry, but I think the floydette accountants on ESB know a little bit more about international business deals than one of the biggest promoters in boxing since the 1970's. :patsch

Said this same thing in a different thread on the subject.

Did less Americans watch Ali/Foreman because it was in Zaire or Foreman/Frazier because it was in Jamaica?

If you think there was one less television viewer because of the location for those fights as opposed to if they were in New York or Las Vegas, then you are crazy.

I believe Arum to an extent. Using China for labor is cheap, that's why so many American companies have their products manufactured in China. Plus the US taxes and such. But what I don't believe is that the PPV numbers would drop by 50% because it's in another country. It's advertised here the same, they promote it the same, it's on PPV at the same time, most casuals probably don't even know WHERE the fight is taking place.

I'd suspect a small drop in PPV, but not 50%. It's no coincidence that Pac's 2 weakest fights took place in Macau. Arum is testing the waters and investing in the Chinese market. I think it's smart to host a fight in Macau with a cheap fight card. Pacquiao won't fight Bradley or Mayweather in Macau, I'd suspect, because those are expensive cards. So Arum cherry picks a cheap fight for Pac just to test the waters in China.

    My guess?
    Pac-Alg in China = 300k PPVs
    Pac-Alg in US = 350k PPVs

Why dont people call it for what it is?

There will never be an important fight in China. Arum just has the right fighters to throw in exhibition matches over there, cause the fans dont give a ****.

They just wanna see their countrymen (asian) fighters pound away their opponents and they will pay big bucks to see it. Arum will never risk putting his guys against live opponents in China. Its not worth the risk.

What Im not sure about is how Pac gets additional revenue since he cant get a bump from PPV sales. I know he pays less tax, but is that it?
