Honestly he was ok, I don't remember ever being irritated by Stewart at all really. Wish I could say the same for most, there should be a test for commentary like basic boxing knowledge etc.
It was probably Reg Gutteridge, God he was awful. Jim Watt is horrible too, Arguello must have really shook his brain.
i don't know the worst but it is very likely british commentary. i listened to some fake ****ing **** from british commentators.
Bobby Czyz during Tyson/Holyfield 1. He was usually a sharp analyst. He was friends with Mike and apparently dropped a $25,000 bet on Tyson. Late in the fight Czyz was talking about the fight could end in a draw. Holyfield had won almost every round. For him that was bad.
It definitely wasn’t Reg Gutteridge - I personally liked him - or Ian Darke for that matter. It was a guy I heard just once and not on any other commentary. Hopefully that reflected the brevity of his commentary career.
I’ve heard some bad commentary from British commentators but also some good stuff. What is it specifically that you don’t like about them?
it aint all bad but i've seen even fights called like the home guy won 12-0. i met and like ricky hatton, but the british commentary for the floyd fight made it seem like ricky wasn't boxed the **** up.
Honestly he was one of the coolest but I remember hatin' all the commentary related to him and the HBO crew on Pac vs Marquez III, glazing Pac a bit too much, and he joined, again, Larry Merchant insufferable hating towards Floyd early part of his career. Like, I know y'all commentators found bro annoying but give it a break lmao
ABC employed Chris Schenkel and Keith Jackson as - what i called - Utility announcers. They were good, because they had the knowledge of just about every sport, or simply did their homework, and could cover wherever they were needed. If Cosell was unavailable, one of the two would fill in and do a very respectable job. Now back in the mid-70s NBC was not the boxing powerbroker that ABC was, but they really broke into it by gaining the rights to the Ali-Richard Dunn title fight. But for whatever reason, the commentator they used was Joe Garagiola, who was strictly a baseball announcer. His commentating was poor and interspersed with a lot of baseball jargon ("Ali is winding up like Kofax on the mound." - or something like that) Not everyone is a utility announcer.
Australian commentary when an Aussie is fighting. It’s always a shutout for their guy. Jim Watt’s call over Crawford-Burns was bad. He was praising Burns and taking it personally that Crawford was outclassing him. Marquez-Barrera was so pro Barrera it was sickening.
If Holyfield beat me up I’d probably be a little biased against him too… interesting fact about Mr Czyz he was in MENSA.
