I know nobody had complained about JCC vs Taylor I, that's for sure. but the whole thing is, many of the fights that would have gone the other way when just putting on 3 extra rounds, could easily have gone very differently when making it 15 from the start. One of the obvious ones, Bute vs Andrade I isn't as obvious if was made for 15. Bute had dominated and tried to finish of Andrade in the final rounds, only that backfired in a major way. You can be pretty sure there wouldn't have been any urgency from round 11 on yet if the fight had gone exactly the same for the rest, that would have come as late as round 14. Maybe he would have been caught or gassed out in those rounds, or maybe he would have stopped Andrade by accumulation, we'll never know. There are many fights that would have gone differently if the last round went on a little longer (say a 4 minute round), but you can't accurately predict fights that have 3 extra rounds from the start.
Leonard Hearns 2- Leonard would have stopped the hit man Chavez Jnr vs Martinez-Chavez could possibly have stopped him Eubank Jnr Vs Saunders Froch Ward- slight chance that Froch could close the gap as he had a strong finish Whitiker vs Chavez snr Pernell pts
A lot of these examples I disagree with because some of the efforts put into the current championship rounds 11-12 would have been saved for the 13-15. Entire tactics of a fight would change to compensate for the extra 9 minutes.
Most of the fighters today would NOT have hung with the champions of the 70's, or for that matter, champs of earlier decades.
Not necessarily, as some fighters of the 15 round era weren't suited for going the distance either. Those today that have trouble going 12 rounds would have never been able to navigate the 15 round distance.
I agree with that. What I was more saying would be everything would be different... More corners would throw in the towel earlier in one sided fights since there would be 3 more rounds of punishment. Some fighters would throw less punches as to conserve more energy for the extra rounds. Contemporary fighters who "go for broke" at the end in the 11th and 12th wouldn't be doing so until the 14th and 15th. Certain champions with weak stamina likely would have found less success. etc etc etc.
You don't think that MAB was pretty close to being stopped by Morales in the 3rd fight? He was almost knocked down from a pretty insignificant punch in the last round. And he almost went down again from a non punch and total exhaustion in the 12th again.
Chavez Jr vs Sergio Martinez comes to mind, but at the same time in a 15 rounder he might have waited until the 15th before going all out (so same outcome). Froch-Pascal wouldn't have gone the distance, way too many bombs being landed in that one. ODLH-Trinidad maybe (or would Oscar keep running?)
