A plethora of belt-line punches, followed by a single "low blow" at the end while Kovalev was hunched over. Not accurate to say it was a plethora of low blows.

    He was?

My thoughts were always along the line of:

Bute looked good because he fought subpar competition, ducked the tournament saying he’d face the winner (which he didn’t) then got obliterated by the runner up Froch.

I don't think Rigondeaux has been ruined, only his image.

David Tua was never the same after taking the punishment Ike Ibeabuchi dished out to him that night.
Ibeabuchi literally walked out the ring that night with Tua's heart.

People say that Meldrick Taylor wasn't the same after the loss to Chavez, but I think he still had some fight in him as an elite fighter when he beat Aaron Davis. It was after his beating at the hands of Terry Norris that he was completely shot afterwards.

Sergio Martinez's legs were never the same after being on the brink of being stopped by Chavez Jr in the last round despite winning the rest of the fight big. He should have lost to Martin Murray and Cotto put him to a brief retirement afterwards.

One hell of a war that fight. Can still remember watching it with my father when I was a kid.
Arguably 2 of the best fighters not to win a title...

It took a lot out of both fighters to be fair. It's well documented that it changed Ike for the rest of his life, outside of the ring too.
When he returned to the locker room he heard voices in his head and was surrounded by demons.

""As it was, the torturous months and years of persistent headaches, hearing voices and seeing demons that followed his victory over the highly-rated Tua would ultimately thwart him from fulfilling his potential."As it was, the torturous months and years of persistent headaches, hearing voices and seeing demons that followed his victory over the highly-rated Tua would ultimately thwart him from fulfilling his potential."

What followed was just the beginning sadly... attempted ****, kidnapping/attempted murder of his partner's child.
