I just finished watching Gavilan-Bratton III and was reminded again how brave referees used to be.

This one really should never have been allowed to go the full 15, though Bratton deserves enormous accolades for pure guts. Shocked he was able to stand up at the end. in this day and age, that fight would most likely have been halted with Gavilan's first really big barrage that snapped Bratton's head back repeatedly in the eighth.

Given that Bratton never really sagged and actually came back dancing some, I think it was right to let it continue from there. Rounds 12 and 13 were tough to watch though, and it really should have been halted at that point. Absolutely no point in letting that continue.

What similar fights have you seen where you marvelled at the fact the fight was allowed to continue?

If we include ones that were stopped eventually, I remember the 6th round of Hearns v Andries being quite surprising.

    Most of Joe Grim's fights.

A man whose courage and durability was matched perhaps only by his lack of skill, his record reads like a who's who of all-time greats in most weight divisions in the early 20th century. The only interest in his fights was whether or not his opponent would be able to knock him out. Many tried, including Fitz and Johnson, but only a small few ever managed to stop him. Neither Fitz nor Johnson did it despite multiple knockdowns. This type of cruel matchmaking would not be tolerated today (at least I would hope not!), and certainly most of his overmatched fights would now be stopped early.

6th round Hearns-Andries : I'm not saying it should have been stopped, but no one would have complained if it had been. And it was surprising that it wasn't stopped.

Andries was a tough tough man.

Larry Holmes vs Randell "Tex" Cobb

That was the prototype of a fight that shoulda been stopped, Larry used Tex's head as a reflex bag for 15 rounds

How come no1 mentioned Vitali vs Briggs or Calzaghe vs Lacy or Pacquiao vs Margachito ? them modern day classics i didn't bother 2 watch .
After Johnson floored Toney and Toney rose and Johnson smartly teed off on him I sometimes wonder how d ref didn't stop it then ? it was quite similar 2d McCallum vs Jackson ending and even more similar 2 Jones vs Thornton , but Toney did shook it off in d post last moment and waged war back and back 2 retreat Reggie Johnson went .
Jones vs Toney , however , does not belong 2 this thread at all .
I don't necessarily claim that Toney should have been stopped vs Johnson but if I was d referee , I could very well stop it . It was d closest I have ever seen Toney 2 being stopped .
Jones vs Johnson deserves a mention as well , 12 rds of abuse .
Had it been Johnson in his prime it could very well end like Jones vs d other Johnson :yep , but Jones waited 4d right moment as usual .

Anthony Logan should of beaten Benn, I think anywhere else in the World he would of.

Richard Steele let Tommy continue after he got up from that bulldozing he received from Barkley in their first fight. Which, maybe ironically, Steele could of previously stopped in Hearns' favour.

That fight looked like it was held back in the 1920's with no requirement to go to a neutral corner and stay there until the ref restarts the action.

Fullmer vs Kid Paret and Fullmer vs Basilio (#?).

Fullmer said he got tired of beating on those guys....they were
    just too small.
