Azumah Nelson moved up to win the WBC superfeatherweight title in Feb 1988. He was 30 years old, and had already beaten Wilfredo Gomez and performed brilliantly against Salvador Sanchez. Record 26-1.

Julio Cesar Chavez defended the WBC superfeatherweight title for the last time in August 1987. He was 25 years old, and had good wins over Juan La Porte and Roger Mayweather. Record 55-0.

Had Chavez hung around at superfeather for another few months or had Nelson stepped up a few months earlier, who would have won a clash between these two over 12 rounds?

    Please vote and explain.

I think Azumah waited for JC to move up, to avoid this fight. Chavez would have boxed as well as Azumah, better puncher, better work rate, better chin, better better better. Nothing that the Professor could do Chavez could not answer. Chavez by stoppage in around 10.

JCC by late stoppage. Nelson was a great fighter but Chavez was just superior to him in every aspect. It would've been a war until Nelson got worn down and taken out late.

Frazier vs Norton (Late 1972 - Early 1973).

I can not decide a winner, a hard one to call. I can see Norton scoring knockdowns in the early rounds but I also see Frazier getting inside and busting Norton up later on. Who wins this classic that never happened?

My heart is with the Professor while my head says Chavez.

I think Chavez is the better boxer and would win 8-4 or 7-5.

    Good, close fight.

Nelson actually spent a good amount of time trying to get a fight with Chavez.

Chavez reached his absolute peak at 135 in the Rosario fight IMO. A boxer/puncher type like Nelson, who didn't really shine in any area but was very well-rounded, would give Chavez a lot of problems, and I highly doubt Chavez stops Nelson, who was only stopped early in his career to Sanchez in the final round.

In the end, I'd probably favor Chavez to edge a close, tough fight for the decision.

I accidentally voted for Nelson too. You can discount my vote for him.

I think this would have been an absolute war.

I see Nelson really stretching Chavez and having considerable success in the first two-thirds of the fight, but I do concur that JCC would have a little too much in his armoury and would come on strong towards the end to win a close but deserved points decision.

It really should've happened this one.

A battle of attrition, Chavez wins, very late.

I think Azumah might just stop him in the late rounds.

It's not that he "waited", it's that he was busy trying to make a fight with Barry McGuigan. It wasn't until that fight was dead and burried that Nelson turned his attention upwards, but by that time Chavez already had his own attention turned upwards.

I'll take Chavez by wide decision over 12. Nelson was a great fighter but had a bad and consistent habit of squaring himself up to his opponent. This would leave him very vunerable to a body attack against Chavez (a great body puncher). Chavez would evade a lot of Nelson's wide shots and pick him apart on the inside.
