I thought it might be interesting to talk about fights that took place during heavy rain, and the implications that this might have had. Two that spring to mind are John L Sullivans three hour bare-knuckle bout with Charlie Mitchell, and Harry Grebs epic win over Tommy Gibbons in a thunderstorm.
I have a funny old video with Brian London and his opponent boxing bare feet in a torrential rainfall. The referee is wearing a raincoat over his fine dinner jacket.
Dempsey-Tunney 1, Heeney-Madden, one of the old lower weight championship fights in Thailand, cant remember which.
Albert Davila fought Enrique Sanchez in the rain. Pone Kingpetch also fought in a torrential rain, but I don't recall the name of his opponent.
Jimmy Carruthers fought Sonkitrat in a torrential downpour in Thailand in defence of his world Bantamweight title. The rain was so bad and the canvas so slippery, that they both dispensed with their boxing boots and fought barefoot, to gain better purchase on the canvas.
I believe Cuevas/Ranzany took place in heavy rain at Old Hughes Stadium in Sacramento. Pipino KOd Pete in the 2nd
That would be London against Roger Rischer.Absolutely sheeting it down.London stopped him.I think it was in Liverpool.
PS.It was either Liverpool or Blackpool as they made a joke of the "pool" bit as it was raining so much.
I remember this fight was on live TV. London destroyed Rischer in one round. I think it was indoors though. I believe the fight which took place outdoors in torrential rain was London v Howard King. Both fighters had to remove their boots to avoid slipping.
