I'm having a discussion and i'm forgetting about a lot of these fights. Can you guys help me think of some besides the obvious floyd vs pacquiao. Paul williams vs Pavlik is 1 Gamboa vs Juanma Lopez is another what are some others?
Felix Trinidad vs Ike Quartey. In 1998 Main Events signed Trinidad and was going to start the new deal with a bang against Quartey, but King nixed it shortly after. http://www.nytimes.com/1998/06/27/s...ght-30-million-deal-makes-trinidad-smile.html Prime Tito against prime Quartey would've been way better than DLH-Quartey. Quartey would've landed with that perfect, snappy power jab, and would've attacked when Oscar ran, but if he couldn't take Oscar's hook he would've been obliterated by Tito's.
Gamboa-Lopez wasn't a promotional issue in the way your other fights were since they were both Top Rank fighters at the time. At the same time, it was still a promotional issue insofar as Top Rank didn't want Gamboa exposing Lopez. Here are some recent fights that never occurred due to promotional issues: Mayweather-Margarito Cotto-Berto (2011) Donaire-Mares Donaire-Moreno Bradley-Khan Rios-Matthysse Rios-Gamboa Golovkin-Chavez Jr Williams-Margarito II Here are some fights that were delayed due to promotional issues: Pacquiao-Mosley (delayed when Mosley was top at 147 because he was with Golden Boy) Pacquiao-Marquez II and III Mayweather-Cotto Chavez Jr-Martinez Martinez-Cotto (originally proposed for 2011) As you can tell from your examples and these, a wide variety of fights across divisions have been scuttled due to promotional issues. It would obviously be impossible to point to a common denominator across this sample of fights that have failed to come off!
how about mosley/berto? technically berto used the earthquake in Haiti as an out but we both know that goldenboy/al haymon hand their hand in it...because Floyd was trying to negotiate a manny fight and manny backed out....leaving Floyd without a viable opponent.....so ole berto pulled out so that Floyd could make that may date with shane....and shane was hot at the time
"Shane was hot following a year out of the ring...?" shane was coming off the margs win...it was a layoff but he was still hot enough for Floyd to want that fight and make it successful
"Floyd was trying to negotiate a Manny fight. Yeah, of course he was." the fact that al haymon had berto pull out of the mosley fight(which was signed) tells u all u need to know about Floyd/pac negotiations manny pulled out(well he was never really in...it was fake) and had the clottey fight in his back pocket ready to go......meanwhile Floyd was serious and had nothing else planned.......al having berto pull out of mosley fight was a last minute/ditch effort to find Floyd a suitable opponent since pac beetched out
