I nearly posted that originally! How bad does the judging have to be that you would get a fairer shake outside of your home town!

Which close decisions are you thinking of? Del Valle is the only one I can think of that could easily have gone the other way.

I've read Zarate's biography and he claims he was suffering with the flu. I know fighters make excuses but I tend to give him the benefit of the doubt, he didn't look himself. Whether he'd of won or not fully fit is a different matter.

I read that description too. I think both Gomez and Zarate had "issues" going into that fight.

Exactly. Benitez wouldn't rematch Antonio Cervantes at a neutral site, after Benitez took his Jr. WW crown.

1976-03-06 : Wilfred Benitez 138½ lbs beat Antonio Cervantes 140 lbs by SD in round 15 of 15

Saoul Mamby vs. Muangsurin and also against Marrero might have had different results elsewhere.

I tend to believe him here. I always assumed he was overwhelmed by the hostile atmosphere and that affected his performance but illness would also explain it. Not taking anything away from Gomez, though, who absolutely destroyed him.

I'd have been interested to see a rematch between them because I suspect it wouldn't have been as one-sided. But when one fighter has beaten another so emphatically like Gomez did to Zarate, there's rarely much interest in a rematch because the matter appears settled.

It was a SD on Wilfred's home ground. Would have been nice for Benitez to give Cervantes a rematch on neutral grounds.
"Former champion Wilfredo Benitez was stripped of his 140 lb. title for refusing to defend his title against Cervantes."

Antonio Cervantes vs. Carlos Maria Gimenez (2nd meeting)
    (Redirected from Fight:17079)
1977-06-25 : Antonio Cervantes 139¼ lbs beat Carlos Maria Gimenez 139¼ lbs by RTD at 3:00 in round 5 of 15
Gimenez cut over eye and not out for 6th

"Columbia's Antonio 'Kid Pambele' Cervantes captured the vacant WBA junior welterweight title Saturday night scoring a TKO victory over Argentina's Carlos Gimenez. The Columbian's victory came after referee Marty Denkin of the USA, stopped the fight at the end of the 5th round due to a cut over Gimenez' right eye. The decision prompted minutes of disorder as several spectators stormed the ring. Pambele cut his rival in the 3rd round when he connected a solid left jab during a flurry of exchanges." -Associated Press

    • Former champion Wilfredo Benitez was stripped of his 140 lb. title for refusing to defend his title against Cervantes.
    • Gimenez' manager Tito Lectoure was so upset by referee Marty Denkin's decision that he physically attacked him in the ring when the stoppage was rendered.
    Post fight comments
    • "The referee has been dishonest. There was no reason to stop the fight because during the whole round there was no bleeding." -Tito Lectoure
    • "They have no dignity. How can they do that to me?" -Carlos Gimenez
    • "The decision by the referee was a good one because Gimenez had a big cut." -Antonio Cervantes

They wanted to put the fight back but were under pressure to go through with it according to Zarate.
