salvador sanchez beat up wilfredo gomez so bad that he was never the same again, despite winning some fights after. All the starch was taken out of him, and he went downhill rapidly.

Actually, the Gomez deterioration was prior to that bout when before Gomez even moved up in weight. Those great Gomez legs were gone and the days of crouching/dipping almost to the floor was a memory. Anytime those guys that dip to be effective start standing upright, the whole ballgame changes and losses pile up.

    Charles Williams/Sosa I.

Fight was stopped because BOTH fighters were unfit to continue. They were killing one another, literally.

A heavyweight friend of mine was fighting an 8 rounder ,in the 3rd rd he got clipped with a terrific left hook and left everything in his shorts.

No they were not! Well yes, in the literal sense of the only thing guaranteed about life is death; so every extra moment you are on the planet is a moment closer to your death......

It was a brutal fight, no doubt, but I believe the ending came because the ref was trying to make a name for himself. There have been just as tough fights before and since and no referee has felt the need to stop any big fight since, as a double TKO.
