There's an adage that says 'A great slugger usually beats a great swarmer'. Do you know of any fights where the great swarmer beat the great slugger?

I haven't scored Fenech-Nelson 1, but apparently Fenech deserved the nod, well i saw the first 8 rounds or so, and i'm sure i had him ahead.

That's all i can come up with!

Jose Luis Ramirez against Edwin Rosario. Although not normally a "swarmer" Ramirez was against the bomber Rosario. moving inside and negating Rosario's big punch. With good results.

Teeto i wouldnt really call nelson a slugger. He was more refined and skilled IMO and countered well of the ropes in that fight.

Although Fenech did defintily deserve the nod.

Man i feel its nitpicking saying Nelson wasn't a slugger though. The man loved a tear up and almost always initiated one. The man is a fighter by design, and like i said in my 'fighting off the ropes' thread i thought he had fighting off the ropes down to a fine art as i put it. But he was fighting off the ropes in that one because Fenech put him there.

Chang vs German Torres 1 and 3 are great performances against a good dangerouns, huge punching slugger.

Though styles meant little to one as mighty as Chang.;)

I haven't seen so much of Pancho Villa, but certainly his pace acted as a swarming tool against the prolific big hitting little man that was Jimmy Wilde.

Don't think I would really call Wilde a slugger.

    More a boxer puncher/counterpucher type.

    Having a nightmare here aren't i?!!

You know what i mean, the thread is not moving too fast so i interlinked 'great slugger' with 'great ko artist'. To be honest from what i have seen i think he liked the good ol' slugfest a bit, but i know what you mean in that he doesn't go in smashing shots from the get go as in Stanley Ketchel. More bounce to him as well.

When you get right down to it, there are basically no great fighters who were "just sluggers" so you're going to end up splitting hairs.

    I like the Wilde/Nelson picks.

Would it be fair to say Foreman was a "swarmer" and Frazier a "slugger"?

The two words often are interchangeable.

Hagler didn't always employ a swarming style, but that was the strategy in play when he swamped Hearns, who might have preferred trying to start by a feeling out process. Marv forced Tommy into the same slugging mode he applied with Duran, and he got Hearns to expend 12 rounds worth of exertion in three minutes, as expressed by Steward afterwards. Quarry-Shavers could be described as another swarmer over slugger example. Jerry smothered Earnie, never really letting Shavers get off.
