Fights where a great swarmer beat a great slugger

Hatton-Tyszu, Phillips-Tyszu, Margarito-Cintron - none of the victors weren't really great but still.....oh and Castillo-Corrales but that went either way

Nitpick Im bored too, no Phillips isnt quite a pressure fighter, Corrales was the slugger beaten in a none swarming fashion by JLC

 

Ha, nar i just wanted to say that if Janitor is going to jump on me for labelling Wilde a slugger then he sure as hell should do with you for doing so with Tszyu.

And that i was going to say Margarito-Cintron but didn't as you said because of the great thing.

And to really **** you off i was gunna say Castillo for me i wouldn't call a swarmer, rather an 'educated pressure fighter'!

KOstya isn't a slugger.Too texbook and fixed in his punching style.

 

Dempsey/Firpo, though the "great" is an obvious stretch for Luis.

 

Jeff Harding in his first and third fights with Dennis Andries. Does that count?

 

Great swarmers beating great sluggers don't happen very often, and when they do, its usually the slugger who's out of his prime.

If the slugger has the better chin, the swarmer is in for a tough night.

Maybe Hagler over Mugabi would qualify as an example, though Mugabi wasn't great.

A while back there was a lower weight fighter named Wayne McCollugh ( spelling ), who threw a tremendous amount of punches. I wonder if he beat any great sluggers.

 

One mutual opponent of Marciano and the Ole' Mongoose famously stated that Archie hit him harder than the Rock did in 20 rounds. (Of course I'm referring to Tiger Ted Lowry.) The hardest single shot that Moore ever landed may well have been the right which floored Rocky in round two.

Marciano didn't punch out Archie, he beat him down with relentless pressure. If you look at the footage of Moore on the deck after getting floored, you can see his torso heaving with exertion. Rocky's win can be argued as an example of quantity over quality.

Pryor was there for Arguello to hit in Miami, so Alexis was shooting to kill, not trying to box his way to a points win. After the Hawk took his best, Arguello crumbled mentally, and then physically. ("I hit him with good shots, and nothing happened.") Alex had his moments early in their rematch, but again to no avail.

 

Interesting. Yeah I do feel Moore is underrated as a puncher from my boxing fans. He could hang and did better with the bigger heavyweights and was a great precise and hard hitting puncher. Ring Magazine ranked him #4 among punchers. Marciano made a poor accounting of himself twice against Ted Lowry and for the first bout he had the flu.

 

Though I wouldn't say Medel was exactly a slugger, maybe Fighting Harada's effort in the rematch against him would count as a near enough example.

Perhaps Henry Armstrong vs. Pedro Montanez would probably be a better example. Greb beating Mickey Walker another. Jackie Kid Berg beating Tony Canzoneri would perhaps qualify though Tony was more than just a slugger of course.
