Inspired by Pat M's comments on another thread....

Name some fights where the ring construction/condition effected the ability of the fighters to perform and perhaps favored one fighter over another...

Sullivan-Mitchell in Chantilly France... wet, sodden ground. Probably helped Mitchell's fast feet.

Dempsey-Tunney I in Philly... again a wet ring that probably favored the more spry, more peak Tunney.

Ali-Foreman in Zaire... loose ropes that probably favored Ali's Rope A Dope

    More?

Marciano-Cockell (size of ring, ineffectiveness of referee, bias of state athletic commission about size of ring)

Albert Davila- Enrique Sanchez. Fought in Miami, Davila fell behind early before the wind and rain set in on the outdoor site. Davila craftily turned his opponent into the wind and began scoring heavily. It ended in the 11th, a storm-assisted TKO for Davika.

Now that's what you call a ring general.

This is the link to the discussion we were having about the ring surface in the Jorge Castro - John David Jackson fight. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/fotw-20-the-castro-johnson-jackson-decisions.625429/ Not sure if the slick surface benefited either fighter but if it did, it probably helped JC since JDJ was more dependent on movement and also because JC out weighed JDJ by about 6 pounds. IMO, the fight should have been stopped and the surface should have been fixed as soon as the fighters started slipping. It was obvious early that JDJ could not push off of his back foot to get power behind his punches. When he would try, his foot would slide backward. Early in the fight, it looked like JDJ was trying to keep the fight between the Pepsi and the other ad on the floor, but it was a small area and he couldn't keep the fight there. JC had problems with the slick floor too so it affected both fighters. It was like fighting on ice.

Pretty sure mayweather vs de la Hoya was in a slightly smaller sized ring, although I can't find a source. This obviously played in to Oscar's hands. Although Floyd won pretty clearly, in my eyes at least, the fight might have been even more convincing for Floyd.

Also I think there was a bit of controversy before the Fury Klitshcko bout, in which the canvas had to be changed as it was much softer than usual, which would have effected Fury's movement throughout the fight. I think Fury and his team said they'd refuse to fight unless it was changed.

IIRC Lennox Lewis said it was more like a wrestling mat.

I think Klitsscko's injury that pursponed that fight was probably from trying to practice for his stupid uber padded canvas

The slick canvas of the Hearns-Cuevas fight heavily favored Hearns who didn't have to get within range. The canvas had Cuevas slipping every time he made an attempt at getting close, although the result would have eventually been the same.

McGuigan -Cruz - the heat of the desert favored west coast bred Cruz.

Ring side is generally negotiated in the modern era so that one doesn't play with me. It's like glove size.

And the temperature is the temperature. It is the same for both guys (unless you are a pasty Irishman facing a Texan)
