Inspired by last Saturdays fight where Shakur beat Teofimo Lopez to become world champ in his first fight at 140. Any other instances where a fighter goes up in weight to challenge the champion above and was able to beat therm in their debut at that weight class?

Michael Spinks moved up from LHW straight to Heavyweight to beat the Lineal HW champion Larry Holmes twice.

    Canelo vs Sir Gay Kovalev.

    Pernell Whitaker vs Vasquez

    DLH vs Whitaker

    Mayweather vs DLH

I feel like this is semi common. Especially under the modern system. Champion from the previous weight class goes up for a title shot. And sometimes they win that title shot. If you look at list of 2x+ division champs you'd think like half of them fit this criteria?

Think Tommy Burns got the title in his HW debut? Burns hopped 2 classes though.

OP said in their weight class debut though which makes it a bit harder to list.

In previous times fighters — champions, contenders and others alike — often tested the waters at higher weights.

Guys like Duran and Arguello fought non-title bouts at higher weights to see how their power, speed and punch resistance held up. And it was going on decades before … sometimes a middleweight’s next payday was to fight a light heavy and he’d come in at 164 or 165 and give up 10 pounds.

Seems to me like Monster Inoue has done it multiple times. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will set me right.

Yeah I'm saying a lot of these guys get a title shot in fight one because of their accolades in the lower class. And that would probably be about half of a 2x champ list.

Yes its harder to list. But easy to find examples.
