Fights where the loser fought a tacticaly perfect fight and lost on points?

i meant Ray Leonard boxed the perfect fight but i felt he lost

Pernell was great defensively as ever and didn't go too much wrong on the defense, he fought the perfect fight tactically in that the name of the game 'hit and don't get hit' was going well within his favour, but he didn't amount enough of an offense to win the fight.

 

Its fights were the LOSER fought a tactically perfect fight, Ray won.

 

Holmes won, check the thread title.... unless of course you think Ken fought a tactically perfect fight, I do not, Holmes did tho & deservedly won, it should have been a UD.

He fought southpaw the 1st 2 rds, he had 10 rds to correct it, Leonard was there to stay, Hagler would never have stopped Leonard, never, no matter which style he used.
SRL was tactically brilliant & stood his ground in the moments when he wasnt boxing Hagler`s ass off.
I admit Marv eventually made it a close fight after conceding 5 of the 1st 6 rds but Leonard won it, the decision was fair (not the 118-110 one tho, that was mental)

 

Another one yet to be mentioned is Shavers---Ali. Nobody and I mean nobody was picking Earnie to last all 15 with Ali. It was considered a ko fight all the way with almost everyone picking Ali the second half of the fight.
When you considered Shavers and his stamina about the only chance you gave him was a quick ko or inflict a cut. But the longer the bout went, Earnie was going to be in big trouble. He really didn't have all that many fights that went long and very very few of them did he look impressive in. The bout re3ally illustrated how far Ali had slipped but was still a real nice tactical effort by Earnie==and it simply had to be==to hang in there the distance.

It wasn't long after this that a young Holmes made Shavers look like the old guy he was. But Ali sure didn't.

Iran Barkley fought a tactically and strategically perfect fight against Roberto Duran 20 years ago.

* commitment to body punching on the older man
* sustained pressure and a hectic pace based on the assumption that he'd fade late. A tried and true assumpion that one. Barkley was in his prime at 28. Duran was in his 22nd year as a pro.
* Jab the smaller man to death.
* left hooks had been an issue for even the prime Duran. Barkley's left hook was supernatural. And he was landing it.

Iran also had every physical advantage you could have -reach, height, natural weight, speed, power, physical strength.

Hell, even the ring was a bit soft, which forced Duran to exchange more often in the danger zone.

--And Barkley lost anyway.

Duran had one advantage. Skill. It was enough.

 

Trevor Berbick did everything that he had to do against Larry Holmes in order to stay compettive against him. The gap in talent was too wide to ensure that he was ever going to win, but it doesn't mean that he failed to fight a very very good fight that evening.

 

yeah, joe was punching before he even reached hopkins creating an illusion of workrate. a lot of the slow-motion replays show him throwing dazzling combinations to air!

 

With that logic in mind my late buddy bet a co-worker $100 on Ali AND that the fight wouldn't last the distance. You should have seen him in the 15th round when he had Shavers in trouble. atsch Needless to say he wasn't a very happy camper.
