Jumping into the way back time machine: -

Johnson vs Willard. The name of the game for Big Jess was patience, stamina, absorption of punishment and dragging Jack as many rounds as he could into the 45 roumd pre-set limit.

Johnson, normally the careful, patient counter puncher, but now 37, out of shape and knowing his own reserves were somewhat limited, HAD to step it up to try and put Willard out. He didn't succeed - but it provided for very valuable and less often seen examples of Johnson showing off his punching capabilities via serious, unbridled offensive bursts. Bursts that literally had the big cowboy reeling from one corner to another but with Jess still somehow holding his feet.

 

Correct, I hate that the narrative is that Hagler is some kind of face first brawler. He was an elite boxer puncher first and foremost.

Incidentally this is in my top 5 of the worst fights I've ever watched (and I'm a fan of Chris Byrd).

 

Juan Manuel Marquez certainly liked to fight on the backfoot and counter punch. In his 1st fight with Diaz who was overwhelming him on the ropes, Marquez started to come forward and put some hurt on Diaz to the body eventually getting KO.

Salvador Sanchez another great counter puncher on the backfoot, was forced to come forward against the ridiculously tall Featherweight in Patrick Ford to get the W.

 

JMM vs Bradley and Mayweather are examples of where the slower JMM couldn't outbox or counter by hanging back on the outside, and it just wasn't conducive to his attributes to go on the front foot, close the distance and pressure his opponent.

Admittedly more of an example of where he would had to have fought on the front foot to have stood a chance of winning, but didn't/couldn't.

 

I think Mayweather has always met guys where he wanted to or needed to. I don’t think personally he has ever been someone from the cloth of say Jimmy Young who only fought one way.

 

Where do you guys read this? Nearly every Hagler thread there is someone saying how misunderstood his style is that he was a “boxer puncher” and never have I heard him in any circle called a “brawler”
