Kronk gym always had too hard sparring which is why Hearns is punch drunk. Benitez’s dad had him hard spar heavyweights from when he was like 12 apparently.

Ferdie Pacheco said that a lot of ALi's problems came from sparring without headgear in his second career.

There will never be another Kronk.

We warred hard up at Galaxy doe.

I saw Bronco at a Cobo show, he called me over to sit with him and his pretty lady friend. We were talking back and forth and I asked him what it was like to box me. He said the thing with you was that I'd never get off of him.... I nail you and you're right back on me.... I miss a shot and you're right back on me..... Bronco was sharp man, really sharp. And when he connected. Bronco is like a brother to me doe. We don't see each other much at all but I hope that he is well. He was sharp when I last saw him, he looked good. I hope that he is well today.

I had heard the name as an amateur, a tough kid in the southern part of Michigan. They wanted to match us up.

I remember Jackie bringing him down to our gym, she wanted me to work with him as amateurs. He was wanting to turn pro and she was looking at him.

It was a spar where I ate some and delivered some. We were a good match.

Even back then he was sharp.

As pros we would spar many times.

We punched each other in the face many times.

I warred hard everyday in sparring. Train as you want to fight, because you will fight as you have been `trained to fight.

I wanted to get comfortable warring, and I did.

Truth is, probably every boxer who ever sparred was damaged somewhat by it … obviously the more you spar the more damage you take.

    Unfortunately, that is the truth.

Amateur and professional boxing are too different sports doe.

In the Ams refereeing, our job was to keep the kids safe. In the pros, well they are being paid to give the fans a fight.

I compare amateur boxing to playing football. You'll get your bell rung from time to time.

I recommend amateur boxing to any kid with a little grit.

Great post, somebody had told me to look for you as you know wtf you're talking about.

    This post proves that.

But how do you bring up a fighter with out putting them above their head in sparring from time to time, either they sink or they swim.

I refereed, fought and coached in the ams, my main concern was their safety (when not fighting).

These officials look out for the kids safety.

If one kid is getting his *** handed to him than simply stop the bout, he'll fight another day.

Amateurs equal safety in a dangerous sport.

    Professionals equal damage.

Well it’s not like headgear would really help in that regard either.

Head gear is not designed to stop dain bramage, it's main purpose is to prevent cuts and swelling.

And maybe give some protection if their heads should come together. (that sheet will leave you ringing deep doe)

And the head gear actually compounds the blow landed, where the brain bounces around more.

Maybe this is the answer to the Gym Wars thread.

It's also why he was a straight out *** kicker. Sure Hearns got dropped a few times, there were a couple that should have never happened (when comparing skill levels), when you're fighting the best sheet can happen doe. Hell, when you're not fighting the best sheet can happen.

    Long Live Thomas Hearns!

Bronco was there too and he'd spar with James. McKart wasn't too friendly, but maybe you got to know him differently....
James treated sparring partners like sh*t. I don't know how anyone would want to be part of his training camp. His trainer Bill Miller tolerated a lot. A lot of firsthand stories from seeing him in training. When Roy whipped him, he needed that and had it coming.
To be fair though, he also had a good side and was decent to my father and I....

Speaking of Kronk, I understand Oba Carr is not doing well and is confined to a wheelchair.
He made the mistake of a lifetime ditching Steward and joining up with King's clown team. He should have won a title but totally screwed his career up. Look at him now.

You can spar as much as you like if you wish, but a price gets paid for that. Too many of these guys go on for way too long.

Were you up at the original Galaxy in Redford, above the Maaco shop?

Bronco was always proper with me when speaking and when sparring. I'm sure that you met his dad. I believe that we respected eachother.

Bill had told me that James was out at night with Dre, Snoop and the like instead of resting his body after camp at night. James did not take the camp seriously and Jones just whooped him. James did have a good side doe, coming up as amateurs we got along just fine. That kind of changed after he won the title.

And that is really sad to hear about Oba. If he came up in just about any other generation he would have won a title. But Delahoya, Trinidad and Quartey? He fought them all. Oba was the man and Don King is a piece of sheet.

Were you one of James' friends who always came with him up to Galaxy, it seems that I saw one of them with James in the ring in his last few fights.

Those guys were his friends for a long time....................

No, this was when James came to the Fernwood Resort in Bushkill, PA. He had a few fights there in the early 90s and I got to watch him train. Even did a painting for him which he bought. Good times... He should never have fired Bill Miller but he was angry at everyone after he lost to Jones. James was eating too much. In his room he had pizza boxes stacked four foot high with those big gallon gatorade jugs stacked on top of that. Bill called him out on his choice of friends and he got angry and fired him....
To be fair, he was young and gung ho, nobody is perfect. I'm sure he regrets some of the things he did just like most of us do....

Bill Miller was so cool and damn did he know just about everything about this sport. I never got to talk with him up at Galaxy, my trainer was ALL about the work, no time to talk. But years later I ran into him at a gym in Royal Oak. He was training guys but we got to talk alot. He told me that if I got into shape that I could still do something, that made me feel good, but I know what that would entail and I just couldn't do it with working. I had just sparred with a fighter that he was working with. Every time that we had sparred I was the ultra aggressor, this guy could counter punch doe and he always gave me trouble. On this day, I said F it and went back to how I was trained as an amateur to box. That being a classic boxer walking the ring controlling with the jab working him. I outboxed the sheet out of him. I remember looking at Bill standing outside the ring watching. His mouth was held wide open, like he couldn't believe what he was seeing. Up at Galaxy Bill only saw my ultra-aggressive side, he never saw me boxing while working a jab. That guy that I sparred said that he never knew that I could box like that. I guess they never saw me as an amateur.

    Bill Miller was so great.

I will always be thankful of the time that I spent around him.

R.I.P. Bill, thankyou for what you gave the boxing world.
