I wish most of those 1980s ‘B-division’ heavyweight title fights hadn’t happened to spare us slopfests like Witherspoon-Tubbs and its ilk.
I actually would've liked to have seen Hearns v. Jones. Jones would likely win v. this version of Hearns, but Hearns still had the bazooka and had enough left to out-box a very skilled Virgil Hill. If Hearns managed to catch Jones at this juncture, we would have had a better grasp of Jones' chin. Hearns' stiff jab and reach advantage - in addition to Jones' reluctance to engage with big punchers - may have given Hearns quite a few rounds, too. I see this as a fairly interesting fight.
Sam Langford vs a lot of the top fighters around at the tail end of his career. Mickey Walker vs Joe Louis was talked about at one point!
Before Roy Jones fought John Ruiz, there was talk of Jones facing Vitali Klitschko. I think that would have been ugly. Klitschko was far too big and strong.
I always did also. And Mike Mc Callum thought Hearns was the guy who could beat Jones if he didn't get careless.
Me too just because he complains so much and he wanted in on the fun, yet those guys were slipping by the time he would have fought them. He would have had a more clear advantage because of slippage than because of actual skills. Some will say he was the same age as Ray and older than Hearns, but he peaked later.
I thought the Norris vs. Chavez fight they spoke about would have gone bad for Chavez, yet what if Chavez would have won. Norris was just too big. And I am glad that Czyz never got the chance to fight Hearns since Czyz knew at that point Hearns was on really shaky legs and wanted a win over a name. He was an opportunist, but Czyz could not beat two guys Hearns beat Andries and Hill.so I didn't think he deserved it even though it would have been a good fight the way both guys fought. I think Hearns wins by TKO late.
Ali - Frazier 4, which was on the table for a few days in the autumn of 1977. Joe Frazier - Kallie Knoetze in 1978, which was cancelled because Joe had hepatitis.
