He's well known among the local boxing community, and he had brief glory days back in the day. Title win came out of nowhere, but could not sustain it.

Seemed like a decent dude. Black mestizo Filipino. Amerasian.

I think he even became a real life hero, KTFO a mugger on the streets, one time. (when he was already done fighting)

    He's no Filipino legend, though.

No. Local as in the whole Philippine boxing community, the fans and all that.

I think he's originally from Olongapo City, where the US military bases used to be.

Ah. Pare, I get confused when you say "local." I don't know if you just mean in your area. Are the words "domestic" and "local" seen as synonyms in Pinas?

Ah OK. Yeah, I guess so.
Usually, I differentiate things as "local" and "international".

Your definition of "Local" = "regional", for me.

I'll use the clearer definition next time. Thanks for the clarification.

yes it was but considering that he fathered a child in the philippines, $150 a month is just typical and might even be big if it was in the rural areas.

As mentioned earlier by some poster, his main objective in life while growing was to see his black american father who had a tour of duty in Subic naval base. He used boxing to achieve success and eventually became the youngest pinoy world boxing champ. Some big time pinoys helped him locate his father somewhere in the states but when he finally locate the house where his father lived and knocked at the door, his father said something like, "go away, I don't want to talk to you".

WHat a coincidence . I have never heard Morris East name dropped once on ESB... But last week when there was a thread about who the most undeserving challengers to win a world title.. And i brought up Morris East who was unheard of i threw a quick rundown of his story (about his dad he didnt know etc etc).. .. BUt talk about exaggeration, a legend? Oh well props to East for knocking out a big punching Champ in Hiranaka.. But he was easily beat by Coggi in his first defense.. Never heard from him again.
