From time to time I post something about Filipino Boxing and its influences. Last time I posted how the great Flash Elorde influenced the young Cassius Clay style that became emulated by countless of boxers thru the years. No way I'm insinuating that Flash was the best to use this style for Ali was a master at it but Flash was the originator.

When I was training Kali/Escrma, Kickboxing, Judo a long time ago in the upper west side of Manhattan.. We would usually have Monday nights class at my instructors apt. His name is James Berkley his pen name is Karasuma Kantaro (wrote Igensho google it the best book about M Arts) Anyway if you want Kali/Escrima/Judo/Juijitsu/Kickboxing, gun instruction let me know if youre in the NYC area

Anyway there would be about 5 cats in a class.. A couple of Blacks, 1 Boriqua, a jewish guy..Chris Sayoc a flip (who by the way the best kali instructor in the U.S.) I was the youngest..

These guys will talk old time boxing..My partner kim (whos black for Harlem in his 50's)will always mention Filipino boxing to me...one day I heard Sensei saying that "Yeah you can clearly see his influence on Ali" I said who?? He said elorde..They would often laugh at me for not knowing how great Pancho, Villaflor and Elorde was.

Anyways..just want to share this link...just makes me proud..just hope Filipino boxing makes its way back. It pretty much states that Filipinos invented boxing the way we know it

Why isn't there an Asian Boxing Forum or a Filipino Forum? Not that I want these guys to post less on the general forum, because I don't mind them at all...

What the **** are you talking about!!! :patsch ..This is a known fact..go to Wikepedia..its not me its widely known...:nut

It is widely believed that the Mano Mano skills influenced

once Filipino immigrants moved to the USA. Until the arrival of Filipino boxers in the USA, American boxers used a "

" stance with arms stretched out with both fighters standing toe to toe exchanging blows. It is believed that the Filipino boxers were the first to use a more closed or tight guard with the bobbing and weaving motions that are common features in modern boxing style. The fact that Filipinos were well versed in weapons fighting, in particular knife fighting, is believed to be the reason behind Filipino fighters having tigher guards and the bobbing and weaving motions. The American boxers soon adopted the Filipino style, and this format changed the art of boxing worldwide to the one recognized today. Even though the Philippines produce many world class boxers in the lighter weight divisions, many still currently study their indigenous martial art.

Yea the style definately fit the greats like Walcott, Pep, Louis, SRR..... or modern fighters like Jones, Toney, Lewis, Floyd, **** even Klitsckos.

I mean come on majority of the greats adapted to their own unique style......

I can see what Chimba is saying. It influenced the basic style with which much is built on these days.

I've heard about it before, but boxing has had some many different influences, its ridiculous to point to one and claim it to be the sole reason we see fighters like Tyson or Sweet Pea using tonnes of upperbody movement. It would have played a very small part in the evolution of boxing.

No, he just has a grip on reality. To say that you guys "invented boxing" is perhaps one of the stupidest things I have ever heard.
