The topic of film quality, and how deceiving it is to ones ability to judge a fight/fighter comes up a lot in the classic forums as a hot topic. Personally, I always believed that fighters would look a whole lot better with modern cameras than they do with old cameras. Im sure everyone agrees with that statement, but some to a very minor extent. For me, film quality is a huge contribution and factor to the belief many people have that modern fighters are just quicker, sharper, and faster.

It is very hard to have the ability to properly judge this. Some people try editing modern films to make them appear old, but its not nearly the same. As a film major, I have seen and worked with different camera's and different styles, and I feel as though it gives me a much better ability to properly perceive action filmed on older cameras. I think I kind of got my vindication on some level.

Today I came across something that seems very insignificant, but is a big piece of evidence when talking about this subject.

We are all familiar the the Ali Williams bout. Personally it is one of my favorite boxing matches in history, because it shows imo the greatest boxer ever on his best performance. This fight luckily has been restored to great quality long ago. And today, you can find the fight on HD just on youtube.

Well I cam across an old interview with Cossell and Ali, where they examine the bout with Williams. However, this is an old recording, which I believe happened in the same year, and the interview is in black and white, and the quality not too great.

What I noticed, is when they start watching the bout, it looks almost exactly like other fight films I have of older fighters. It looks exactly like Ali Liston 1 were most used to seeing. And more importantly, I realized how less amazing it looked in that quality. It still an astonishing one sided fight, but there is so much missing from it. The facial expressions, the impact from the punches, the SPEED of Ali's hands and feet, the SMOOTHNESS and "grace" of his style, the muscles flexing. All of things were nowhere nearly as visible in the black and white version, as they are in the color restored version.

This makes me wonder, how many fighters in the past fall victim to being underrated due to film technology? This is nothing I didn't know before, but this was just a real eye opener for me to see with my own two eyes, how big a difference quality makes.
