It's time we all moved on from the tickling contest featuring Haye and Klitschko and looked at a feast of potential great fights this saturday night coming from the states. Firstly a few of mine that i'll predict. On friday we have the unpredictable show that is ESPN'S Friday night fight's, always good to laugh at Teddy Atlas's predictions and antics and it has a decent main event that could be a nice match up. Jesus Gonzales (24 - 1) VS Francisco Sierra (24 - 3) Why will this fight be good? Because Sierra is a much improved fighter who is great at pressuring and carries good power, I can see him breaking down and pressuring the more wary Gonzales and taking him down in the late rounds. Now thats just a nice warm up for Saturday's wars! One that is a bit under the radar is Lucian Bute defending his IBF super middle weight crown against Jean Paul Mendy. Who knows what Mendy will bring to the table since crumpling in a heap after an illegal blow by Australian "head in your face" brawler Sakio Bika. This will be entertaining because Bute wants to make a statement and should be able to break down the slick yet cautious Mendy and score a tasty knockout victory, one for the highlight reels. Then to the REAL action, now fight fans will have a tough choice on choosing which card to watch, but this is where either way you'll be seeing a good night of action. The in-form zero to hero Carlos Molina takes on the annoyingly still in the mix-up at light middleweight Kermit Cintron. Why is this a good fight? because Molina is another pressure fighter who has been springing surprises in his division with his effective body-punches and swarming attacks, what he lacks in finesse he makes up in sheer heart and determination. Will Kermit get frustrated if he can't put a dent in the relentless Molina? All i want is Kermit to actually be in an entertaining fight again, rather than his weird tactics against Williams, and his cheating against Martinez. Maybe Molina will spring a shock and stop Cintron. Now for the other great bouts you only have to look as far as Paul Williams making his comeback bout against up and coming Cuban sensation Erislandy Lara. Both camps are taking a huge gamble with this fight, has Williams recovered from his brutal knockout defeat by Martinez to take on such a confident star, or do his camp know something about Lara. Afterall Lara was last seen huffing and puffing around the ring against Carlos Molina, either way both have hand-speed and a slick speedster style to boot. It should be one for the pugilistic purists. I'm taking Paul Williams by a close decision. As for an unknown fight that people are looking forward too, Rico Ramos has his first world title fight against the newly crowned Akifuma Shimoda. I don't know much about either fight so maybe it will be a 'good un'. My personal favourite of the night is seeing the seemingly iron chinned Brandon Rios in a personal grudge match against Urbanno Antillon. Both are entertaining fighters and with the rivalry thats taken place in the build up, i can assure you this will live up to the hype. Rios by knockout in the late rounds after a great little tear up. Anyone else gonna be staying up for these bouts?
The Williams -Lara fight has me interested. Im suprised Lara's cam ****ed him with Williams this early to be honest. I dont think the brutal knockout he suffered against Martinez will set him back too much. Rios-Antillon should be a ****in war. Looking forward to that one.
Lara can be unpredictable though, he's got good power early on in his fights because of his hand-speed but Williams if he gets through those cautious early rounds should be able to start establishing his jab and good work rate and take Lara down into deep murky waters that he couldn't handle against the less technically able Molina. I can't see there being much clinching and it will be a very clean fight which is what i'm looking forward too.
I picked every fight right apart from the Gonzalez Sierra bout! damn I should have done some betting. (Rios won earlier than the late rounds, but boy what a fight!) As for Molina, i had a feeling he would spring a shock, and i missed the Williams bout, and it certainly was a close decision!
Did Lara dominate him? I can imagine something stupid like that and then Williams taking home a gift.
I don't cry "robbery" in close fights but Lara clearly won. Williams was game and always coming forward (as usual), I can only think the judges scored for that but he got completely outboxed.
