I had always heard about what a great puncher and prospect the great Jeff Merritt was, had never seen him. Here's some video of Merritt vs. Stander. Wow, he really had torque! I guess he hit harder than Frazier. Too bad he was done in by the drugs or mental illness or whatever it was. Video begins halfway through after Ali's clowning... This content is protected
Great article on Merritt, I'm sure it's been posted before: http://www.boxing.com/candy_slim_the_curious_mystique_of_jeff_merritt.html
Too bad the Stander that made Merritt look so good was 30 pounds over his already porky best weight thus giving Merritt a much easier night and making him look better than he was. When a fatass post prime Stander is one of the best wins on your resume you dont really need to be bragging about being an unsung gun of the 70s. Four months later he was knocked out by feather fisted Henry Clark who was to that point the best fighter he had fought (no i dont include a shot Terrell as the best fighter he fought). This is just a case of a guy not being anywhere near as good as the hype generated by his weak record.
Great job in finding the Merritt fight. (That Chacon vs Boza Edwards fight is available on YouTube after the Meritt fight ends. Chacon passed away in Sept 2016..Chacon held victories over seven other men who held a world title, and later avenged 5 of his 7 losses. The world champions he beat were: Olivares, Castillo, Lopez, Marcano, Limón, Edwards and Frias. Originally nicknamed as "Schoolboy".)
Jeff Merritt's most well known for being Don King's first fighter and a tough gym fighter (hard hitting from all accounts) and another armed robber.
