Finally did research on Roy Jones. He actually did avoid most of the top MW-SMW.

After Hopkins beat Tarver, I thought Hopkins-Calzaghe was a 50-50 fight, and I wasn't too far off being as Hopkins had Calzaghe in a big hole in the first half of the fight, but Joe fought back and stole most of the later rounds. I only watched it twice and after the first time I remember thinking it could have gone either way.. I watched it again years later and thought Calzaghe had a decent lead at the final bell.

I gave Hopkins little chance of beating Pavlik after the Calzaghe fight... I thought he was finally done.. Boy was I wrong there.

It was because of the Calzaghe fight that people thought Hopkins may have come to the end.

Yeah, I remember him being confused as to which corner he was in.. Which could mean he was just super fatigued trying to keep up with Calzaghe.

I also think Calzaghe-Pavlik would have been a similar ass whooping as Lacy-Calzaghe. I also thought Calzaghe had a good chance to unify LHW, but I guess he no longer had the desire.

For some reason I seem to think I read that someone mentioned Hopkins went to the wrong corner something like 7 times?

Changing the subject, I was looking over an old thread from years back and wow you have changed your posting a bit through the years. I think because you seem a reasonable guy and open to others opinions, you have started to see through hype a bit more than you used to.
    Fair play to you

Well most of my knowledge was from memory and reading old ring magazines.. Growing up I just followed the real popular fighters and of course Roy, so I guess I was kind of casual.

I have been extremely biased at times but I am open to other's opinions and have learned a lot over the last several years posting here.:good

    Thats very honest of you.
I was looking at an old thread and some of the fighters I mentioned were not fighters you would have heard of, but not been so aware of, but now you have done some research and come back with new opinions. It is refreshing to see someone who has looked at something one way and gone back and looked again.
It is very easy for casuals be completely influenced by magazines and hype and often these things are just an opinion of a fighter a journalist has likely followed like a fan would

Some of it may have been my maturity level.. In my 20's I was a lot more opinionated and argumentative.. Now in my 30's I have opened my mind a bit more.

I still think Roy beats Calzaghe prime for prime though.:rofl

I was actually watching some highlights of Joe when he was younger.. He had one hell of a left uppercut that he hurt and wobbled several fighters with, and it was usually thrown in a combination.

You didn't see him throw it as much or as hard as he got older. It may have made Roy back off for a minute if he was hit clean with it, or possibly even knocked him down.. who knows.

You could see his power as an amateur but he had hand problems before his pro career even begun

Eubank had been in with some huge hitters and said Joe had good power.

At the time, I thought it was a draw. I think it was quantity vs quality.

Bernard's tactics were horrible, but the truth is, he was forced to act in that manner because he couldn't cope with the pace.

If they'd have fought earlier it would have been very intriguing.

I'll go back and watch it again one day.

I can remember being so excited for Bernard's fight with Pavlik. What a great advert for boxing. It really epitomised the old adage of "styles make fights"

Very true. And as smart as ol Nard is I have little doubt he can watch fight tapes and know exactly what he will try and exploit before he even picks the opponent. Credit to him though, seeing it and executing are different things. I wonder what it was he saw in Kovalev? I know it had to be something. But he stood completely no chance in that.
