Finally did research on Roy Jones. He actually did avoid most of the top MW-SMW.

The Ring Magazine has Jones ranked #4 in 1992, and #1 in 1993. I think that too much weight was given to his talent and amateur background versus dues paid in the ring as a Pro to have been labeled with high rankings at that point, but there it is.

Who knows though matchmaking and promoting and the various belts have a lot of politics and economics behind it to get the fights made, its not just as straight forward as the fighter saying, i wanna fight this guy and duck that guy

You mention Eubank/Benn as two of the elite guys taht Roy ducked in the mid nineties but left out Steve Collins. Collins beat both those guys in the mid nineties and wanted to fight Roy but jones ducked him repeatedly.

I'm old enough to remember those days and my Dad and I would discuss Roy avoiding fighters back then when it was happening.

Hopkins was basically nothing at that time.

I think Roy could have added to his legacy by fighting Calzaghe in his prime, and winning a title at CW.

This is nonsense. Many guys avoided Jones in his career. He beat 6 hall of famers at various stages of their careers (Hopkins, Trinidad, Tarver, Hill, McCallum, and Toney), four of whom were in their primes. He also beat two other guys, (Pazienza, and Castro) that you could make a strong case for.

The one hall of famer he lost to, Calzaghe avoided him, and was honest about it, early in his career, quote:

"I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels I wouldn't want to risk it."

Michalczewski, whom a lot of people say Roy "ducked" had 50 fights, 48 in Germany, one in Portugal, one in Poland.

Roy Jones was not going to go to Germany to be the "B" side for anyone in 1996. Just wasn't going to happen.

    Fail thread.

and people rate Jones ahead of Mayweather. Jones isn't even ahead of Tarver.

The one and only reason why I jumped for joy when he got KO2 by Tarver was because I despised him for avoiding the toughest challenges.

Seriously? I would have thought you were following boxing in the 90's.

ANYONE who followed boxing in the 90's knows that RJJ DID in fact avoid the toughest challenges in and around his division.

Ah yes, the "lets blame Roy for the DM fight never happening" angle.

    That never gets old

Only if Roy had beaten him and Joe had've still gone onto do great things afterwards.

At the time, he'd have been criticised by the U.S. fans and media.
