Mundine's poor opponents cheapen boxing

A WORLD title fight is supposed to pit the best fighters in the world for the ultimate championship.

Anthony Mundine's selection of a cheap, easybeat in Jose Alberto Clavero is a slap in the face to any of the fans he still has following his attack last week on Cathy Freeman.
Mundine is an excellent boxer but most of the time he thumbs his nose at the Australian fight public by repeatedly choosing opponents not in his class.
They come to Australia for no more than $40,000 and a couple of economy class air tickets.
Mundine believes he'll still get a crowd and Pay Per View sales whether he faces a poor opponent or a top-shelf one, so invariably he goes for the cheaper, lesser-known brand. Too bad if the opponent is in serious danger.

Mundine up against another dud

November 02, 2007 HOW does a guy with just two wins in his past seven fights qualify for a world title fight with the self-styled world's supreme athlete Anthony Mundine.
Argentina's Jose Alberto Clavero has gone winless in his past three bouts after being knocked out by Sam Soliman and disqualified against another Aussie, Paul Briggs, after looking reluctant to participate.
Now Mundine, searching for the weakest, cheapest possible opposition for his comeback from an eye infection, is defending his WBA super-middleweight (76kg) title against the hapless, hopeless South American.
Mundine announced he would dismember Clavero, who is somehow ranked 15th in the dubious South American outfit that is WBA, at Sydney Entertainment Centre on December 10.
Clavero has won just twice since 2004 and the men he beat have a combined record of eight wins between them in 43 starts.
After squashing Clavero, Mundine will then likely fight a rematch with Danny Green in Perth provided Green wins the WBA light heavyweight title against Croatian Stipe Drews at Perth's Challenge Stadium on December 16.
Mundine said doctors had advised him to undergo a cornea transplant after developing an infection in his left eye. But the transplant would have ended his boxing career.
"(The vision) is not going to be 100 per cent. This is probably the biggest adversity I've faced in my life," Mundine said.
Certainly a lot bigger adversity than a guy with two wins in his last seven fights.
