Alright Fella's Just re-watched DLH-Vargas...what a fight!!! I never been a huge fan of DLH but this is the fight where i had to hold hands up and give the guy props. What i noticed was mid-fight the way he adapted when things weren't going his way. It's a essential part of being a ''great'' champion. There's being a champion then being a great champion. The great champions find a way to win. It may be ugly sometimes but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Sometimes it's a minor tweak. Sometimes it's a major change in tactics but at the end of the day it gets them back in the fight and gets them the 'w'. Can you name examples of champions who were up against it but then ''adapted'' and found a way to win?? :think It be interesting to see what you lads come up with and what adjustments were made and how they changed the fight.
Quality Shout :good Remember it being really tight on cards up to around round 7 it was nip and tuck and then Calzaghe took the fight away from Kessler. For all his knockers that performance was class.
Mosley v Mayorga Shane didn't neccessarily 'adapt' as such, but still found something at the very end of a fight he hadn't performed in, and many thought he was losing. Still one of my favourite moments in a boxing ring :yep
Yeah he hung on in there and kept plugging away in a contest where he was far from his best. A man's gotta do what a mans gotta do...Mosley knew he needed something big and didn't he do it :happy One of the greatest modern day examples IMO, Down 3 times hurt and in a state of shock against a man who was blasting away the older Mexican legends. He neutralized Pacquaio's main weapons and began to win round after round to claw a result out of nothing. In Adversity we see the real signs of a man. Marquez showed why he's one of the greats of this era.
Audley Harrison vs Michael Sprott II. Injured his arm after afew rounds, but still stayed in there and fought on. People try to ignore these facts, there was a point in the fight when Audley Harrison started throwing left hooks and Jabs one after another all with the same arm........in a desperate attempt to stay in the fight....and stay in the sport of boxing, to save his career and pride. Audley Harrison needed a knock-out going into the last round, everyone watching that fight thought it was over for Audley Harrison. I remember a symbolic moment in that fight when Audley Harrison in his corner, was just kind of looking out of the ropes into the crowd. It was almost as if he was searching for some support, looking to see if there is anyone out their feeling any empathy for what he is going through and what he's fighting for. But Audley Harrison as he looked out into that crowd before that 12 round, could only see the people who have tried to belittle him and destroy his character, all those haters like vultures waiting to pick him apart if he falls to his demise. It was Tupac Shakur that once said..... "Only God Can Judge me" Audley Harrison seems like a man, who has already been judged by millions. 9th of April 2010...............they where all so wrong. The Equalizer...!
Maybe not on the same scale as the above, but i always liked the way Hatton adapted in the Eamonn Magee fight. Dropped early for the first time in his pro career against a complex southpaw with decent pop, he abandoned the pressure fighting come forward style that had blasted away everyone in his path previously, and boxed his way to a comfortable decision. Maybe not the best or most remembered performance of his career, but one in which he adapted a totally different style to do what he had to do to win.
Buchanan - Laguna II -- Ken had to fight square on after sustaining cuts and swelling around both eyes
Leonard vs Hearns I - Behind on points, went at Hearns like a possessed mad man to get the stoppage late in the fight. Cotto vs Clottey - Cotto took it to the outside in the last 4 rounds after being cut and struggling with the strength of Clottey to win a close decision. Napa vs Ballone - Behind after 6 rounds, he stepped it up by getting in the inside more and unleashing plenty of body shots, which pay dividends when Ballone goes down and generally makes him back up throughout the rest of the later rounds. Napa wins a close, but deserved, decision.
Danny Williams adapted from having 2 arms properly attached to his shoulders at the start of the fight against mark Potter to only having half that number mid way through and still scored the KO.
Keep em coming lads. Cannot argue with any of them...i agree with them all. How did these guys adapt though? Sometimes i notice lil tweaks like foot placements and feinting before throwing a shot can change a fight. Can be so simple at times.
Not single fights but both Gatti and Tony Zale made adjustments in their famous trilogies that made later fights easier than earlier ones (the first fight in Gattis case and the second in Zales).
I've only seen the fight once, so am happy to be corrected, but don't recall any great ammendments Cotto made that ensured he won the fight. I thought it was a fight that could have gone either way and Cotto was hanging on.
