No it never seemed he lost interest. He went through a couple marriages because how dedicated with the gym. I think he got old really quick, more than anything. Hard life, nearly stabbed to death in prison, and he had a ton of fights (including amateur) in a short amount of time. He basically fit 25 years of boxing into 10 real years, if that makes sense.
