On another thread of the 10 greatest Mexican fighters these guys came out tied for 5th out of 11 people voting wanted to know who the rest of you guys thought was greater.

The thread is still going and a couple more list came out,and it probably slightly changed the pts added. But who do you guys think was greater:huh a coincidence that these guys are almost the same weight. What about HTH if id differs from your opinion on overall greatness.

    Canto was greater.

Lopez could arguably beat him, due to the combo of his own top skills and physical advantages(Lopez would have been a fly in the seventies), but taking everything into account Canto should rank higher for most people imo, certainly those who put a lot of weight into "resume" and quality of opp.

The worst fighters Canto defended against like a washed up Hanagata and takeda were close, if not equal some of Lopez' best like Ohashi, Sorjaturong and Grigsby. He also has multiple wins over genuinely really good to excellent fighters like Gonzalez and Oguma, plus other formidable guys that earned shots properly like Vargas and Furesawa. He should aslo have a revenge win at the end of his career over the extremely talented stylist Chan-Hee Park.

Guys like Gonzalez and Oguma were light years ahead of any recent Flyweights and compare solidly in record and talent when put against most elite Flyweights since them.canto having multiple wins over both of them is like Lopez having triumphed in a series with Gonzalez and Carbajal, and i tend to think betulio and Oguma were better fighters than those two.

Winning a series with Carbajal etc is what most say Lopez should have done to truly secure his greatness, and i agree(though i do think the Alvarez performances are top notch more because of Lopez being clearly past his best than Alvarez being a legacy defining kind of opponent)....well he didn't do it when he clearly had the frame to move up in his prime, and Canto DID do it against his peers, while giving away physical advantages in every fight.

If Lopez didn't have such great longevity for a lighter weight fighter, i don't think this would be remotely arguable.

I'm about as big a fan of Lopez as their is on the sight, and I really don't think the quality of opposition was that bad... but this is spot on. If Lopez had a victory over Carbajal or Gonzalez then this becomes a bit closer. Victories over Matlala and Chana Porpaoin might have helped his cause, too. But on the whole, even those probably wouldn't have been enough to allow him to overtake Canto in terms of historical relevance, based on the quality of opposition that they fought.
