What are your memories of the first boxing match you ever saw? What made you fall in love with the sport?
Willie the Worm Monroe vs Eugene Cyclone Hart! I think as a kid I loved the excitement and toughness that the competitors had....but what made me fall in love was watching it and sharing the experience with my pop pop. Being able to share the experience with my real life hero and have a common love! I miss him, but part of him lives on every time I watch a fight.
Can't remember the first one. The first world title fight was December 1981 Braxton tko10 Saad Muhammad.
Chris Eubank vs Nigel Benn 1 What a memorable and exciting fight it was. Few can live up to it in terms of being a genuine grudge match and atmosphere.
It's a damn shame that was the first time you got to see Franklin. What a fighter he was in his prime.
Hagler v Mugabi. Great fight to start off with, then became a bit of a Tyson fanboy as he was coming up to his title shot. I missed out on some great fights in the early 80's but the mid 80's through to the mid 90's was really a special time to be a boxing fan. Also had a pretty good magazine collection, had boxes full of them.
I started out as a Tyson fan. I was in Junior high . But just like there are some people who love Muhammad Ali but don’t necessarily love boxing. ........The fight that turned me into a boxing fan was Roy Jones vs James Toney. .... Roy showed up in that white tuxedo and put on a show.I was a boxing addict after that......If Jones and Toney were 2 heavyweights I would still be a casual boxing fan. .....I was an addict an that was my first high .
I have no idea what the first match I ever saw was because my father was always watching boxing when I was very young, so I saw a lot from an early age. I know that the first fight that really got me hooked though was Duran-DeJesus III.
Not the first I saw, but the first I really payed attention to or kind of understood: Meldrick Taylor vs Glenwood Brown. I have very dim memories of Leonard and Hagler when they were still active, and I distinctly remember trying in vain to convince may dad that Hagler was the same guy as Gordon from Sesame Street. (My dad usually seemed impressed by his three-year-old's ability to point out, "that's the guy from that other show," but he just wouldn't listen to reason on this one.)
Live was Tyrone Everett vs Alfredo Escalera at the Spectrum. On TV, not sure. Earliest I can remember was Ali-Folley in 67 though there might have been some before that I forgot
