Hi ru....similar here...my dad was watching a taped report of one of the Liston-Patterson fights...I was just walking by...and I got sucked in for life in the boxing vortex...there's no escape either (classic boxing that is)
Benny "Kid" Paret vs Emile Griffith...March 24, 1962 on ABC TV..."Fight Of The Week"...sat with my Dad and watched it...what a way to start.
Ali-Spinks 2. It was on ITV about 8pm at night so im guessing it wasnt live. First fight i ever seen live was Holmes v Cooney as it was a huge event insofar as it was on RTE about 4am and not many people had RTE in my area. The ones that did, their houses were packed
The first professional fight I remember watching was Ali/Spinks II. I had watched some of the '76 Olympic boxing. I remained only a casual fan until watching Boza/Chacon II. Then, I was hooked and started reading KO Mag several months later.
The Thrilla in Manila in 1975 was my introduction to boxing watched it on ABC' s Wide World of Sports, but I was still in my Karate stage, and focused in on that. I fell in love with boxing watching the brilliance of Leonard vs Benitez in 79' watching those two supremely talented fighters matching tactical wits for 15rds. It's still one of my favorite fights.
I don't recall if I watched it, but when I was almost 8 the Ali-Lyle fight was broadcast live in prime time on ABC here in the states. It was the first heavyweight championship to be televised on free TV in quite some time. My dad watched it. I was upset because it meant that I couldn't watch Sanford & Son. My first solid memory was Ali-Coopman the next year, then Ali-Young / Norton-Stander, then Ali-Dunn, all broadcast on free tv during prime time. I was pretty much hooked by that point. Later that year I remember having to listen to Ali-Norton round-by-round updates on the local country radio station.
Can't remember if it was Ali-Foreman or Tyson-Fraizer. I remember watching the Ali movie as a kid and looking up the real fight after, and my father was a huge Tyson fan, so he showed me the Tyson-Fraizer fight so I could see just how powerful Tyson was and experience the feelings of excitement and awe my dad felt when he was a teenager and would watch boxing. I think that's what started getting me interested.
