So as promised I'm posting my first fight. It was a charity boxing night, 3 x 1.5 mins long. I'm the one in the blue/red hat (red corner). Not happy with how I boxed, didn't once keep my guard up or hands high enough (probably due to his height I was sloppy) Got caught in 2nd and put down. After that I don't think I really recovered properly but happy with how I did until then.. All feedback appreciated and make it as harsh as you like, I wasn't happy with myself after but the charity won in the end! Made over £15,000 on the night! /watch?v=lJ40KagIams on YouTube.
Okay, first of all, massive respect for you man. It takes a very brave man to get in the ring and box competitively, well done. As for for how you did, in the first round, you were doing really good, fighting from outside, keeping your balance, and landing some combinations. However, at some point you did started to let your guard down, and started to let him get inside, so he was able to get you off balance. My advice would be to move more. You were fighting really good on your back foot, but add circulating to a side after a combination, or pivoting outside of the way when he is coming in, and continuing. Also, like you said, keep your hands up, the reasons he was able to get the KD was because your hands were down, and you were off balance. Always be balance in the boxer's stance, knees slightly bend and all that, once you are not in that stance, you won't be able to absorb punches very well. I know it is easier said than done, I could tell by the rhythm of the fight that it must have been very tiring, and the nerves always get to you, especially in your first fights. I genuinely thought you were doing really well, and you finished the fight like a champ would, which is what matters. Keep it up man, most men don't have the courage to do what you did, and you showed good skills at the beginning, and good heart and sportsmanship at the end.
For what time I had to watch... The reason you got dropped was cause you backed out with your hands down, he saw it or just got lucky and threw a big right hook off of it from downtown. What looked liked happened after the knockdown is that it gave your opponent inspiration which is gonna make the match a lot more difficult for you when your still trying to clear your head. Overall, you put on a better show than I've seen in some amateur fights.
Massively appreciate both replies! Gaboxing - I agree with you, it was mostly down to me moving backwards in a straight line I think, instead of round like I started and did try for most of first 2 rounds. When I ate the shots, I felt like I had to make up for it instantly which was the wrong attitude. The knock down I agree was completely my fault, when I skip to the sides like that especially on the ropes I need to keep my hands up!! Truth is after the knock down my head wasn't clear and I just tried battle through it, the nerves and adrenaline I underestimated, it takes so much out of you before you even step in the ring! But it's the same for both of us! Jag - I agree buddy, I had to have my hands up there, valuable lesson learnt which I'll take on board! Obviously after he gets a knockdown it gives me an extra bit of energy and positivity, I'm just glad I was able to see it all out! I appreciate that last comment, I thought it started well but got very messy as we gassed out but I loved the experience!
