    Hey,

I've been boxing for about a year and a half. Unfortunately, due to a head injury I suffered outside of the ring I can no longer box. At least no sparring or competition.

I've always admired the intricicies of the ground game in MMA so I figured now is the perfect time for me to try BJJ.

I found a gym near where I live in Tallahassee, Alliance Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Felipe "Zicro" Neto. Anyone know of it?

So my question is basically what should I expect going into this? I'm sure all gyms are different, but generally how are the classes run? I'd really appreciate any information or guidance that may make this transition easier.

BTW I have no experience at all with wrestling or martial arts or anything other than boxing.

    Thanks for the help

    -Luke

Expect to find out that you are not nearly as flexible as you need to be.

It's really not possible to give an estimation of what practices will be like. They can be so different from gym to gym.

    You should check here....

    http://www.alliancetallahassee.com/

Which is where you will be training. They actually have a forum on there... so maybe they could let you know what to expect. Seems like a pretty good gym.

Basically warm up, drill a few moves for technique, then free rolling.

Ill just go off what I do at mine. I get there a few minutes before class starts find a space on the mat and just stretch out the best I can. Then we do a few running drills then some other drills like Brazilian Craps,Triangles,Shrimps,Hip Movement,MMA getups ETC then grab a partner and do the drills being taught to you then some grappling for a few minutes which feels like hours when you first start out in these gyms. Basically when you go in you have no idea how to do these warmups or have a idea what the **** they are quite honestly just watch others and just always soak in as much knowledge as you can. When I started out my first few classes my coach paired me up with Purple Belts to help teach me some things and now im kinda moving along quicker its much easier to have a experienced guy walking you threw the drills. Just listen to them guys there bro and you should be alright dont go in there doing stupid **** like I did being kind of reckless with other peoples body parts and even my own just doing stuff that can get people seriously hurt just drilling. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

    Thanks guys.

I'm not going to be able to start going to the gym until august/september because i'm out of town for the summer. i'm already in pretty good boxing shape, but i was wondering if there's any other type of workout or exercise you recommend i start doing in the meantime that might help to prepare myself?

    nothing
you wont have the cardio for BJJ in doing roadwork, boxing or jumping jacks lol..
the more you do BJJ, the better cardio for BJJ you are gonna have!

but it does help that you are in good shape

Stretching, yoga, and of course general fitness stuff like lifting weights, running, swimming, whatever.

Whatever you can do basically, at the very least it won't hurt your fitness, thats for sure.

The best way to build up your BJJ endurance is basically rolling as much as you can there really is no subsitute to for grappling just like sparring without it you wont get better. First time I started training at the BJJ gym in my city oh man I thought id be able to hang in there and not tire out but **** no I was sore and the lungs where on fire. Never think your good enough bor always try and get better I thought my cardio was great agian to do when I did BJJ class under James Binky Jones for the 1st time hes 2-0 in Elite XC and damnit his class is brutal the warmups where so intense 10 times harder then my usual teacher whos a BB under Renzo Gracie. When we started free rolling hed put 4 of us together and wed pick a number all of 1,2,3,4 and I was 1 and **** I had different bodies coming at me every 3 minutes with no rest it was killing me. I considered quitting but no pain no game I guess they say.
