I've been training for 2 weeks, but I missed most of that time with the flu. Anyways, I'm 6'0, 180, pretty muscular but out of shape. I ran the 1.5 mile in 13:23 a week ago...

I've been learning to jab and I sparred for the first time a couple days ago. I got my ass handed to me. Let me explain. When the round started, I was hesitant to actually hit the guy, and my jab was coming up short. I was quickly gasping for air and then I started getting hit. I moved around and came forward again, and before long I was utterly gassed and my jab was just pawing out there. It was painfully slow so I kept eating counter right-hands. By the end of the 2nd round I was barely able to keep my left hand in front of my face and I got dropped with 20 seconds to go, got up and took a beating.

Now, I'd like to blame my conditioning, which is fair, but I also noticed my skills just aren't there. Dude was letting me come forward and was taking it easy, punishing my mistakes so I'll learn; it wasn't a beatdown or something. But I sucked. I was hesitant to hurt the guy, but even so I only landed one clean shot to the head and threw maybe 1 or 2 rights. I go back into the ring in an hour, any advice? I'm going to try to move to his left more this time and throw the jab more, but I know I'm going to get gassed again and start eating shots. I'm way too tired in there to try anything fancy and I'm pretty outclassed, haha. Is this more or less normal or do I just suck? Thanks dudes.

Haha good, I expected to be a "natural" and just kind of kick ass... it was a lot different from street fighting... I was like a fish out of water. Thanks man.

Sounds like a perfectly normal first session to me.

Reddragod dude, take note of this, this a genuine first time sparrer.

In response to this post, don't worry everyone sucks at first during sparring.

It's a learning process, it looks so easy but once your in the ring it's a different story.

Only advice is the age old motto of practice makes perfect. You'll learn from each sparring session, don't give up :good

    youll catch up mate..

im almost 30, been boxing for just under 6 months, had 2 broken hands and a cut, ive just finished 1 month of sparring without any injury and im amazed by how much progress ive made in that month..

To me, boxing is a sport, which ****s with your mind, atleast when u start. Even peewee and his midget friends can do a number on you. The process of learning s painfull, but stick to it, and you will slowly get better and catchup with those who are now beating you.. This i mean from the bottom of my heart, WHEN you do catch up with some of them and return a "beating", its so goddamn enjoyable..

I sparred a guy tonight who was in the ring for his second or third time. He kept saying how he sucked for making perfectly normal mistakes like turning away and panicking, but he did well because we all made those mistakes, they are 100% natural.

I dont think anyone had a first sparring experience as i did, man it ****ed me up mentally.

I would do all the things you did and got busted up pretty bad, after that for months i kept hesitating to spar and sometimes would make excuses not to,

i dont know what happened after that, i just said to myself why am i being like this, getting hit isn't really hurting and i'm pretty good as punching, since then i had no problems.

Haha, dude, my Dad told me a story like that when he tried convincing me not to box in Detroit. He had a buddy who boxed all through HS, and in his senior year he got into a fist fight with some football player, and he brought him to the gym after when they became cool. The dude was apparently a natural and after a few months he won some Golden Gloves tournament in Pennsylvania, and later entered a tournament where he beat these three hot prospects, two by knockout, who gave Michael Spinks trouble (this was way back in the day...). Even as an amateur he was getting knockouts and later he went into Smokin' Joe's gym when he landed a job in Philadelphia, wanted to lose his ring rust and since he was white everyone just beat the **** out of him in sparring... he never fought again. Keep in mind that guy was tough as Hell and a natural athlete, my Dad spoke very highly of him. There's no shame is that, man. You've gotta be a little crazy to take a serious beating and then wanna get back in, you know? Then again I'm new to boxing...

Didn't get to spar today, but that's cool 'cause my left arm feels like it needs amputation when I work the heavy bag. Thanks everyone, the advice is greatly appreciated.

i remember my first time sparring. i was to use both hands and he was to use just his jab. i go out throw a 1,2. only tapping him lightly with the one getting the two slipped. then all i see is four fast jabs and my head getting snapped back. he was smacking me around with his jab for three rounds.

yellowish green eye afterwords and braces cutting into my mouth but i thought it was great. i looked terrible from what i can remember. even though i was boxing for a good year and a half at that time before sparring.

dont even worry about that man. my first time i came out with a black eye and a broken nose. what makes you better is if you shrug it off and keep working.

Haha, yeah I wish I just had to worry about the jab, but the counter-right is what gave me nightmares. I'm trying to get my neighbor to go to the Kronk so I'll have an inexperienced sparring partner:D Taking an ass beating taught me a lot though, there's a lot to think about and it's a lot harder than it looks.

Focusing on the jab for now is a good idea IMO. And of course defense, unless you like eating punches :)

What he's trying to teach you is to bring the jab back as fast as you can. A punch ends when the guard is back in place, not when the fist reaches its target. Don't be lazy with it, snap it out and return back in place before the counter can land. He probably also sees them coming, so the counter is already on the way when you start jabbing. Try hiding your punches by moving your upper body and by feinting.

I switched to southpaw, threw multiple hooks and finished off with a Hamed style corkscrew uppercut:nut
