Well. Yesturday I sparred properly for the first time it was an interesting experience as both my opponents were alot bigger and alot more experienced than me. I managed to get a few clean punches in, and escape with only a nose bleed. The only problem i seem to have is turning away when my opponent throws a punch, im sure this is just because im inexperienced and i will probably improve on this over time, but has anyone got any tips on how to overcome that? Thanks.

I did the exact same thing first few times sparring. I think it is a natural reaction in a fight or flight sort of response. Thing is, once you start doing that, turning away, you are much more likely to get hurt.

Just try to remind yourself of that and keep at it. Work on backing up and keeping your guards up face forward when you feel the pressure.

Yeah, you sound like you did alright. You're supposed to suck the first time you spar.

instead of turning around hide under those big 16 oz gloves after u throw and keep moving your feet that should help you and after a while you won't be turning anymore

If i was his coach, I'd have his sparring mates whack him in the kidneys or a light rabbit tap to the head, that'll learn the boy.

Yeah I use to turn away. I even did it a couple of times in my first couple of fights.

It's all about having CONFIDENCE in you DEFENCE. It all comes down to that. Being able to have your hands up, catch, parry, block, whatever you need to do but always keeping you eyes on your opponent.

To get you confidence up you need to do some partner work. Like touch stuff, having partner B throw punches at you slowly and increase the speed over a couple of days or weeks(depending on how quick your getting better).

Just remember CONFIDENCE IN YOUR DEFENCE

Concentrate on keeping your eyes on your opponent at all times. If you're turned away you can't see what is going on and that's when you'll get hurt. Most people to that their first few times. But do concentrate on fixing that before it becomes a hard habit to break.
