Great fight. Fitzgerald was in a bit of trouble in 9th but not as much as people think, didn't get hit clean too much and kept a tight defence. Could see him biting down and gritting his teeth mind you, I think getting smacked around made it look worse then it was. Took that uppercut well mind you no doubt about that!
@Serge does Fitzgerald have some gypsy blood in him? Showed a great chin and glimpses of gypsy slickness tonight, as well as his dashing rugged good looks (no homo)
He might well do. The iron whiskers is just a Brit thing but if you add a shot of gypsy blood into the mix then obviously it's only going to fortify the iron even further. And if it does turn out that he has some gypsy blood coursing through his veins I'll consider finding a place for him in the lower half of my official best looking boxers top 10 rankings.
What a fight! Best British fight since Arthur v Gomez? Shades of that too in the cocky home fighter getting floored and beat by a mad man! Fitzgerald has gained a massive fan tonight and I'm sure many more. What a tough tough lad he is and brilliant fighter. Great to see fowler taken down a peg too. Buzzing for Fitzgerald and I will be following his career closely now.
Really enjoyed that fight. Genuine needle, two good prospects both in condition and both fighting to win. Wish they had fights like these more often
Fitzgerald is right to call himself Mad I think he is an absolute loon ! And if he had lost that fight through showboating after putting Fowler down in the last round it would have served him right. Technically he is better than Fowler and whilst I thought he won he needed to throw more punches ! I recognise that Fowler has a tremendous work ethic but for such an accomplished Amateur I am not a fan of his technique. I thought Froch and Smith’s commentary was even more clueless than usual. It was a good fight though and no doubt Matchroom will do it again.
I thought Fowler was out working him. But all the commentary had fitz up so must have missed the shot picking you see live. Fowler is a bit of a bellend though isn't he?
I agree with this. Not trying to take anything away from Fitzgerald, he’s made a fan of me but...I think because the fact he was the underdog, he was getting more accolades for the success he was having because it was partly unexpected. Fowler edged it for me and i might have give him a 10-8 in round 9 but credit to Fitzgerald. Fowler lacked patience tonight, he was working well behind the jab for the first few rounds but he started getting greedy, looking too much for the big shots and was guilty of falling in a bit. We’ve got a rivalry now though.
This is why we as fans need to start demanding these fights. Two unbeaten prospects going at it, what a fight! Fowler will come back from that and still have a good career, it’s a good learning curve and hopefully a humbling one for him. We need the likes of Dubois v Gorman/Joyce, Yarde v Buatsi and then British boxing will be thriving again because them domestic 50/50s are what what get the crowd on their seat. All the casuals were tuned in tonight because of the “needle” between Fowler and Fitz whereas the likes of Yarde vs wheiidofrajdbrhtovic fails to capture the imagination.
Harsh mate, everyone knows Wheiidofrajdbrhtovic is a top prospect. Great footwork, jab, judgement of range, elusive and eye candy for the lady casuals.
