These were some of the points mentioned by a writer over at espn as to what Hopkins needs to do against Dawson, pretty interesting; 1) One thing about Dawson, he needs spaces to work and move. He can't fight his way out of a jam, and he doesn't deal well with awkward or complicated styles. Hopkins already tangled with him, and we all remember what happened: Dawson lost it, and then we lost the chance to see the remainder of the fight. Ugly or pretty, landing or missing, Hopkins needs to keep throwing and moving on Dawson, and then use his ring IQ to find the mistakes he can use in his favor. 2) Dawson likes to fake a jab and then drop his guard before letting his hands go back out. If Hopkins stays alert and calls his bluff, he'll get a split second when he has the upper hand in the counterpunching department. And Hopkins is a pretty good counterpuncher, especially in the short range with his decent uppercut. If he hangs around and uses those opportunities to close the range on the taller and rangier challenger, Hopkins could end up connecting with a few good combinations. 3) If a fighter uses an orthodox stance, the first thing a trainer will tell him about the dangers of facing a southpaw are: don't throw a lazy jab, don't stay in front of him, and avoid the right hook. Well, on this occasion, Hopkins might be better served to execute the opposite game plan. A constant jab -- even a lazy one -- might put Dawson on the defensive and keep him trying to figure out a way to connect. And staying in one place could bait Dawson into moving around, giving Hopkins more chances to mount a steady offensive effort. 4) Hopkins is a great aggressor in retreat. Dawson has been nailed several times while getting careless in the pursuit of his opponent, so this is a no-brainer. The reach disadvantage for Hopkins should be reason enough to try this tactic. It's imperative for Hopkins to bridge the enormous gap between him and Dawson, and making the challenger come to him and then catch him with a counterpunch before moving aside could prove to be a cool addition to Hopkins' arsenal. Plus, B-Hop hasn't scored a KO in ages, so his power isn't all there anymore. If he can meet Dawson's oncoming force with the power of his own punches, the collision should cause more damage. 5) There's no other way to put it: Hopkins inches closer to retirement every time he steps into the ring. His experience is huge, his heart is unquestionable, and his desire to win has kept him competitive at the highest level of boxing for a quarter of a century. He needs to translate this passion and focus into mental dominance of Dawson. He has the moves and the savvy for it. All he needs to do is put it together for one final (or not, who knows?) climb up the mountaintop -- another milestone in a legendary career.
That was pretty interesting. Bernard has alot of experience and knows every trick in the book, I'm not sure how far it will get him in the fight. His reluctant attitude in the first fight makes me doubt his confidence. But we shall see what happens.
As much as I love B-Hop, I'm backing Dawson and when I speak with him tomorrow I'm going to remind him that Bernard can try to use his tricks and experience and savvy to try to outsmart the young guys, he doesn't have the workrate or stamina to outwork them.
6) Make Dawson fight at his pace if possible. Dawson must not be allowed to outwork Bernard. He must be made to miss and think - and he must get hit to the body early. Good post!
For 1) I would like to see Dawson switch directions constantly in spite of moving in short spaces but if it comes up to be inside, better, looping right hand a la Glen on his temple ( and plenty of punches on the blind side of the ref and elbows but don't tell anybody); for 2) I don't want Hopkins to bring the fight to him with feints, let him go outa balance and then nail him in that split second with uppercuts, counter jabs, everything; for 3) I don't want Hopkins to waist energy or concentration with range finders, counter jabs inside as he moves his head to the side and the goofy missed with his would make him decrease the volume of right hand leads, unless he lead right hooks but he won't land any either and he might even stumble forward - remember Hopkins only lost once against a southpaw out of 8 opponents and he didn't use his right jab much - Calzaghe; for 4) that is essential and it is already served, the guy is coming with his lazy and uncoordinated footwork, make him spin near the corners and catch him always with check hooks on the way out of the corners - remember here that arm length and reach are two differnt things or Tua would never get to rahman ( actually watch the supporting fight of Hopkins-Hakkar in Philly and Jim lampley explaining that); for 5) For me, Hops already passed the torch to someone else and that is Ward, never gonna be a fight between Ward and Hopkins so he's going for Bute. I would just relax and have a good time with this loud and large mouth and adjust, he has miles and years of experience to deal with a guy that is going to be 2 tight, 2 nervous, not gonna be fluid b'cause of 1 and 2 and gonna waist himself early on, maybe he'll get a second wind but no way in this earth he will have the self-confidence that Pascal had so just bring his lazy self to the surface and that is make him miss, clinch and when he puts a forearm, just shut his face with the left glove, if he gets wobbled or frustrated and goes for the hookin on the legs, drop an elbow on his head and open some gashes cause we know he's easy to get cut and can't fight with blood streaming on his face. Just have a good time as always.
Tell him a smile and a kind word never goes amiss. And with all due respect,I hope Bernard hands him his balls.:!:
B-Hop should take the fight to Dawson, what he CANNOT do is give him space and distance to work with, he has no chance to win a jabbing contest with Dawson
I've already broke down what Hopkins needs to do. :bart (good post Arcane, enjoyed reading it. Put ALL your Vcash on Hopkins? There's a good lad.)
No doubt, this kind of fight i'd normally avoid as it's a tough call but since it's Hopkins i'm willing to risk my v-cash and become and absolute ****ing disgrace if needs be, just like I did with Morales against Maidana :deal
It will be amazing to see if Bernard at this age can a) Fairly and b) Clearly beat Chad Dawson. If he can, I will be VERY impressed. :yep If Chad does win, I hope he does so in the kind of fight that he could get the credit it should deserve (no controversy).
Top bloke :good If Hopkins loses, then we both get the welfare hand out and can see who's the master mind. :bart
