Has a championship fight ever been proven to have been fixed?

I know the Carnera- Sharkey fight was suspected of being rigged.

Johnson- Willard, likewise. Johnson claimed it was fixed. We've all seen the famous picture of Johnson shading his eyes from the Sun.

Willard- Dempsey. Willard claimed that Dempsey's gloves were loaded with metal.

Ali-Foreman. I just read an article making the case Ali-Foremen was fixed. Foreman's trainer was supposedly paid to ensure an Ali win. Foreman has hinted at this, in the past.

I've always believed the Liston- Clay fights stunk like hell.

Is anyone aware of a known fixed championship fight? If not, any prime suspects?

The lamest attempt at discrediting a championship victory. I can't believe so many supposedly knowledgeable observers fell for that line.

Johnson was kod fair and square, he was groggy after the fight ,and Sam McVey had to help him out of the ring.
After the stoppage Johnson said he was beat by the better man,"no excuses". The next morning he collected his purse and said to Barney Curley the promoter," I did not believe there was a man alive who could survive with me, once I really went after him".
He also revealed that Willard knocked out his front gold teeth, and that he swallowed them.

Johnson bet on himself to win that fight.

Same old story since time immemorial ,the older man overestimated his remaining ability and condition ,and underestimated his hungry challengers.

It's a shame he demeaned himself by pretending he laid down.

He probably made some money telling that yarn, with the 'picture' to seemingly give it some credence. So I do not blame him, the people who 'demeaned' themselves are those experts who let their prejudices get in the way of their judgements.

    Well the obvious,

Sonny Liston vs. Cassius Clay I
Muhammad Ali v Sonny Liston II

Michael Weaver vs Michael Dokes I

    Muhammad Ali vs. Jimmy Young

Muhammad Ai vs Ken Norton III

The problem with these theories is that they all lack one thing EVIDENCE.

But there is 'plenty of hearsay and conjecture, those are kinds of evidence...'

All these years have passed and they still dont have conclusive evidence it just doesn't fit.

The reality is there is so few 'proven fixes'. LaMotta/Fox and Pep/Perez are about the only two I can think of as proven, post World War II. Maybe the US Boxing Championship, the IBC, Bob Lee in the IBF, the WBC Rocchigiani scandal and in Britain, the Duff, Astaire et al cartel, are evidence of criminal actions in the sport, but fixes?

I don't know if that fight was fixed, but I seriously doubt the doped glove story put out by Clay.

There is no source for it other than Clay and his corner. Liston answered it best by saying that if it had gotten into Clay's eyes it would have gotten into his eyes, too.

Clay had a vested interest for telling it. There were loud cries of "fix" following the fight. It was widely believed that Liston took a dive. Clay didn't want his victory to be tainted. It was natural that he try to make people believe that Liston wanted to win.

Ali later embellished the story. He claimed that he was approached by a shadowy figure several years later wanting to sell him a bottle of stuff guaranteed to blind his opponent. He said he had seen this same person in Liston's corner the night of the first fight.

This sounds like a total lie and seriously undermines Ali's credibility.

So Ali actually went out and pretended to be blinded in round 5 and took more punches than he took in the preceeding 4 rounds just so he could say that Sonny was using dirty tricks and therefore was trying to win, full well knowing that Sonny would quit at the end of round 6?

    Sounds plausible.:thumbsup
