fixed fights...how many can u name...?

TBooze, I am aware that Pep lost his license in NY after Lulu perez "kod" Pep.
Perfectly aware. I saw the unhittable Willie Pep in MSG in 1943, 4 years before his near fatal plane crash in 1947.Pep in his prime was UNCANNY.
However in 1954,when he was "stopped" by Lulu Perez, a 21 year old up and coming featherweight,Pep was not the same fighter. Not by a long shot.
Perez tagged him with a right hand ,and floored the 32 year old Pep , and stopped him in the second round .We saw that bout on TV,and it was a hard shot. Pep got tagged,there is no doubt with a right hand a helluva harder
shot than Ali kod Liston with [weight taken into account, of course].
Whether Pep could have avoided that right cross is another story. Pep denied it was a dive.Willie got suspended. Sonny Liston was kod by Ali with an
infinitely less lethal blow, but Liston was not suspended. Double standard ?
Pep always denied he took a "dive" but we shall never Know...Cheers...

 

E B, I saw that fight after visiting my optometrist who declared I had 20/20 vision. Furthermore I had a bunch of carrots prior to that bout. Pep WAS HIT with a solid right hand by Lulu Perez,a fine 21 year old prospect. Of that there is no doubt. Whether Pep willingly and "purposely" took that hard right cross
is conjecture. But he did get tagged....Cheers.
P.S.Two years before I saw Lulu Perez Ko ,Bill Bossio at MSG,a former Navy
man I knew in Va. Bossio was a tough fighter...

 

Here it is, Burt. Yes, he gets tagged, but both the manner in which he's tagged (he looks clearly to be just awaiting Perez to take the initiative) and the exagerrated manner/slightly delayed reaction in which he falls point to a dive. It's textbook.

if liston took a dive you woulda thought he woulda told his own wife that the fight was a fix. very strange - i think liston wanted out of the fight once he was down and when he finally got up they were fighting. complete nonsense ending. fight shoulda continued and may have turned into a good brawl as ali wanted to finish him there and then before walcott stepped in.

agree, while the fight seemed fixed Seldon was just a puss. I mean this guy had a great strong jab & had been in with some good competition. If he fought strong he woulda stopped Tyson in a few rounds just like any1 else has done

E B,thanks for confirming the impression I had that night in 1954,when I saw that bout on my TV set. Pep was hit as hard as he had been tagged,since his
prime days,[excluding Sandy Saddler} IMO.Lulu nailed Willie with a straight
right cross,as we can see. Pep went down HARD.He was truly hurt by that punch and if it was a "dive",why did he get up and was floored two times more, before the stoppage. As I have posted ,I saw the great Willie Pep in his very prime ELEVEN years prior in 1943. His forte was his great ability NOT to be hit SOLIDLY. In 1954,Pep was about through as a great boxer,and his
older reflexis allowed Perez,a solid Featherweight prospect to land his best punch on Willie. We were stunned at that time, but Willie Pep was no rugged
Jake LaMotta who was also "stopped" on his feet, by Billy Foxx in 1947.
Jake,never went down. That was an "admitted" dump from LaMotta,who was in his prime at 26 years of age,while Willie Pep ,never too rugged was a
worn out past peak 32 years of age. I still think that the fight wasn't a
preordained fix, but a once great,but never too rugged Pep getting tagged
solidly three times. I could be wrong, but doubt it EB.

There was a TV show outlining the trial - I remember seeing Ferguson on the stand being questioned...does anyone have a copy of this??
