After a thorough review analyzing his ratings and analysis it is readily apparent that this boxing writer knows his stuff. That said, there are a few things that I would change. Based on footage I would not put Tunney below Dempsey in the hand speed department. I think Tunney deserves a 8.5 or 9 here. Moreover, a perfect score of power for Dempsey, Louis and Marciano seems a bit much as I believe they were a tier below Foreman, Tyson, Louis and Bowe. Also, was Floyd Patterson`s durability really that bad? A rating of 4 seems a bit harsh. Moreover, Tyson was given a rating of 5 for heart? I thought he showed tremendous heart in his fight against Lennox Lewis and find this rating to be a bit harsh as well. my issue with the way this guy rates is it's all based on h2h, no mention of legacy, achievement, resume etc. I might give it a go though, use a similar chart across all the divisions, afterall I do have two week off :good
Agree. The man is a fantastic writer. However, it is just one opinion. Down below is his all time pound 4 pound list. Thoughts? All Time Pound 4 Pound Ray Robinson Joe Gans Sam Langford Harry Greb Joe Louis Henry Armstrong Muhammad Ali Benny Leonard Roberto Duran Ray Leonard Scroll down to the bottom http://coxscorner.tripod.com/divisional_ratings.html
That would make for an interesting comparison. It`s always good to have more than one view on things. I only have today off and then it`s back to the grind.
Yeah I see the merits of rankings guys h2h, just not something I usually do but as a say, I'll give it a go. Perks of being a teacher, holidays galore :good
Agree about about Armstrong and Louis. I think Armstrong`s resume is stronger based on the fact that he fought extremely well at several different weight classes. Cox seems to think that Gans was Robinson`s equal in terms of boxing skill and talent. I`m not so sure as I haven`t seen several of Gans fights when he was at his peak. Maybe you can offer some insight if you have seen a lot of Gans.
How the hell anyone can have Riddick Bowe and lenox Lewis score so high for endurance! These guys had to ration out 30 seconds of fighting a round just to get through a fight they were winning.
If his rankings are based on H2H you can't rate Robinson, who struggled hard against every sturdy, strong middleweight he fought, over Harry Greb. If it's based upon accomplishments/achievements, he can't be rated over Greb either.
Cool writer. He has some other cool articles "Tyson against the legends" etc. I believe he had Lewis, Liston, Foreman, Ali, marciano, beating tyson.
A while back I posted my own spread sheet of data, which has even more data than Cox's. Cox is a good writer, and historian.
Very 19th century-ish attempt to categorize and pseudo scientifically analyze the heavies. Does not at all take into account the quality of opposition upon which durability or power was demonstrated. Fail.
