This is one of the fights that i never get tired of rewatching but everytime the controversy remains. Many people think that the stoppage was fair and many think it was unfair. what do you guys think?
Can't complain too much when Taylor didn't respond to Steele's questions. I wasn't happy though, I was rooting for Taylor and wanted a rematch back in 1991 (after the Norris fight in 92' I didn't want to see one). **** Lou Duva by the way.
I cant remember, my guess is it should be pretty much even. Taylor had the style but chavez had a better record and more experience, Taylor was barely 23
This fight crushed me as I thought Meldrick was a god with lightning for hands . It really turned me against Richard Steele, but funnily enough made me an awed closet Chavez fan. I know Taylor was pretty busted up at the end, but truth is it should never have been stopped with 2 secs on the clock. Taylor was robbed.
I was a teenager when i watched this.. Pretty sure that Chavez was a slight favorite by my remembrance.. Taylor was young hungry and both men undefeated, yet still (Taylor)unproven... Chavez was the Man
I could agree with this but you gotta think that with a puncher like chavez and a fighter in Taylors position one more big punch from Chavez could have resulted in way worse injuries
In my heart I know what you're saying is right especially if you see the way Meldrick slurs these days, but 2 seconds on the clock! If Steele had seperated them properly, neautral corner etc, before Chavez could've got near him it's over. I still expect Steele to let the fight go on whnever I see that fight rerun.:-((
Bull**** stoppage that robbed Taylor of a win that would have cemented him as an ATG. Steele wasn't fighting, he heard the ten-second clack, knew that when Taylor got up he only had two seconds left in which he couldn't incur any more damage, and for whatever reason, idiocy or Don King connections, decided to rob him of greatness. A shameful blight on what was an outstanding fight and a disgrace to Boxing.
The ref called the fight off according to Taylors condition AT THAT TIME!!! It doesn't matter if its 8 seconds or 8 hours, call the fight regardless of time because the time would be in the fighters control, the ref is their for enforcement of rules and health concerns ONLY. If he would have let the clock wind down, it would have been the same as a fixed fight because it would have been benefiting Taylor.
