He's been on a round the world tour getting sparked out in all different countries. Whatever legacy he had , it's long gone, he ruined it.

 

Let's clear a couple of things up. In the 90s and the early 2000s, no one in America took overseas fighters serious. If Steve Collins was a force he would have been big on his own. In fact I never heard of the guy until I joined this forum.
If Roy had of fought him it would have been seen as just another bum fight for Roy. Lets be completely honest, no trolling, but nobody was taking English fighters serious in the 90s-00s. There was only one fighter from over there that was taken serious and that was Hamed. Mistake on our part as we have seen great talent from there that was not given their props or chance at other titles outside of the WBO, but I still don't see what Roy would have gained fighting Collins or Ottke either.

 

Collins lost to two guys that Roy EASILY beat. Roy was on a different level and would have won a wide UD

Collins wouldn't have won a round. Ducked the journeyman Collins to dominate 2 of the men who beat him. Cool story brah

The reality is Collins wanted money for the Jones fight that wasn't on the table.

 

A styles win?

He had great determination and he would have pressured him.

That’s all he had in his locker.

He didn’t have a stylistic advantage.

He wasn’t bigger than Roy. He wasn’t heavier. He wasn’t faster. He wasn’t more powerful. He wasn’t more technical. He wasn’t a southpaw.

Roy was on another level completely.

 

funny thing how european fighters who weren't fighting in the US were "ducked" by jones, isn't it?

while hopkins and jones were PPV, MW and LHW kings, which of these european fighters fought in the US :

calzaghe, michaelweski, eubank, collins (from 1992), abraham (at MW), sturm, steiglitz and ottke?

you see, all of the above european fighters fought either in the division, or one division below, either jones or hopkins. they all won 'a belt' or two, but not one of them made their name in the states - not one.

and due to that, do you know how many of them fought jones and/or hopkins in their prime?
not a single one.
fancy that.

 

He was tougher though, and maybe, just maybe he could negate a lot of jones attributes with that. I could see a late rally from Collins proving to people he deserved to be there losing a UD realistically. The problem we have is we know jnr was a juicer underneath it all, if we'rebeing honest

 

He was extremely tough with a huge amount of will.

Guys like that can be very dangerous.

He could never have coped with Roy’s speed and unorthodox style though.

The stylistic match up would have greatly favoured Roy.

The biggest win of his career was a close decision over a faded Eubank. Go and watch those fights. Go and watch Eubank drop him. Watch the rematch and see how untidy he was.

Heart and determination isn’t enough at that level. He was a warrior with a good chin, but he wasn’t a special fighter. He was obviously world class, but not elite like Roy was. But I do respect him, as he was only one of a handful of guys who truly wanted to fight Roy when he was in his prime.
