Floyd-Canelo is a stellar fight, but now is not the time for it

    Canelo is like Ali in Mexico and could sell out Azteca Stadium fighting a bum, he's also unbeaten, top of the LMW division and is hitting his prime. But the time is not right now for a Floyd Mayweather showdown. Not just yet.

    As big as the Trout fight was in terms of divisional clearance and sweet science exhibition, Canelo is still shy of a Miguel Cotto type of war so the average cable subscriber remembers his name, and we're talking of hundreds of thousands of PPV buys in difference if Saul has a bloody defining fight before taking on the P4P king.

    So the fight fans must be patient and let the showdown build a little. Let's also give Floyd some time to think through if it's very smart to face someone around 167lbs on fight night, because he doesn't owe us such a physical challenge.

    At the end of the day, Christmas sounds like an excellent time to start creating the buzz for a May superfight, the demand will be huge for Floyd to come back, and Canelo could have another name added to his resume and experience, because he's still developing as a fighter and a star.

    It's perfectly okay to wait another year for Floyd-Canelo.

    Will be May 2015, 5th fight of Floyd's contract. Any sooner would be bad business move by SHO.

    I agree totally bro..... I say Canelo vs Cotto in the fall and Floyd vs Khan,Garcia,Alexander fall then the super fight next may....

    Wait too long and Floyd could age overnight, and Canelo will get better - better do it now while floyd is still looking good

    Unless it's a true test like Canelo, there will be little desire from the casual fan to pay money for another Mayweather fight. The risk of Mayweather taking a couple more soft touches and becoming irrelevant to the sporting public is real.

    They need to fight in one of Mayweather's next two bouts.

    In the music business, there is the principle of halves. Once an artist hits peak buys, each successive album sells half as much unless they produce a major hit. The Guerrero fight looks to have sold about half of what the Cotto fight did. The next fight could be much worse. The principle is also applicable to movie franchises and authors.

    I'd rather see it now.

    But from a business perspective, you're correct, it would be better to let it marinate until this time next year.

    Yeah from a business perspective, next May is perfect. But I want the fight asap so Floyd can get it out the way while his skills are still sharp. After Floyd beats him, Canelo will still be a huge draw and can fight Cotto and re win a title from Molina/Smith.

    From a business sense making the fight on Cinco De Mayo next year after Canelo had a massive fight against Cotto makes sense

    From a selfish point of view I want this fight made now, so it does not slip through our fingers like a pacquaio fight did. Get it made now

    I don't give two ****s about the business end of it. I'm a boxing fan, I don't care if they fight in front of 10k or 50k, I want to see it as soon as. No more 'building' crap.

    Mayweather is 36 and is ready to cash out. Canelo desparately wants to be considered the best. September is a great time to have the fight. If Mayweather wins, he's on easy street. He can sit back and fight whoever he wants until he retires. If Canelo wins, he's instantly a huge star, and there will be a huge rematch next May.
