If Margarito beats Cotto will Floyd fight him? And, IF he doesn't what does that say about Floyd and how does it reflect his legacy?

I've been dogging Floyd for months about taking on Oscar instead of a top welter. Then Hatton. And now a rematch with Oscar instead of Cotto who in my eyes is Mayweathers clearest threat. BUT.....if Cotto beats Margs, Im pretty sure Floyd will fight him. He will have to for two reasons. First, Cotto has the fanbase and will provide the type of payday Floyd can't pass on. Second, he would be castrated by casual fans as well as hardcore boxing fans and his popularity would take a big blow.
If Margarito wins though he becomes the biggest threat to Floyd. In this scenerio I don't think Floyd will fight him. He wouldn't take the fight with Antonio a few years back using the excuse he wanted the fight to build and there wasn't enough money in it. Well, if Margarito is any more popular today than a few years back, it isn't with the casual fan. On top of that his following isn't close to that of a Hatton, Cotto or DeLaHoya, so it unlikely Floyd would get much more than the original 8 mil offer. It seems Floyd want Oscar type money every fight now, and no way is that gonna happen here. That said, I don't think he will fight Margs because of it.
If this scenerio does play out, I think his legacy takes a hit. At 130 he took on Hernandez, Manfredy and Corrales as well as other good fighters. He had a great resume' at jr lightweight.
135? He had the two fights with Castillo and two fight against decent but nondescrpt fighters. Many fans thought he lost the first Castillo fight.
140? Corley, Brussles and Gatti. Good fighters, but would you really put them on the A+ list. corley lost everytime he stepped up. Brussles? Nondescript. And Gatti, who I've always been a fan of, but is not an upper echelon fighter.
147? Besides an underacheiving Judah who had lost to the most least skilled caveman I had seen in years, Floyd has not fought a single threat at this weight. Hatto had shown he wasn't elite at this weight. Baldomir, belts or no belts he stunk. And Sharmba Mitchell was but a shell of his former self.
Now, if Cotto does beat Margarito and Floyd fights him it probably isn't going to happen for close to a year from now. This means he hasn't taken on the biggest threat in his division in almost four years. If Margarito wins and he doesn take that fight (which I suspect to be the case) it will be even longer since he's fought the best.
As much as I dislike Mayweather, the kid is a great great fighter. But his resume' has been getting thinner and thinner every year. If he fails to take on the top fighter in his own division soon, I think his historical standing would drop quite a bit. Thoughts?

When people are questioning Floyd's resume going back to his early days, I have to just label them as a blind hater. Floyd's resume is not poor, so find a new harp to strum on.

If that's all the enthusiasm you can muster about Floyd's resume then maybe you should give the OP a second read!

Your reading comprhension skills need a bit of work. I never questioned his comp, merely pointed out that it has steadily fallen off. If you would care to make a case that it hasn't, Im all ears.

Margo dosen't bring enough money to the table so I don't think Floyd will fight him.

A Margarito victory over Cotto would make Margarito the Man at WW and would be PBF's highest purse(DLH and Hatton aside) and PBF would find an excuse NOT to take the fight!

I think Floyd will fight Cotto eventually, regardless of win or loose. Of course, a win will make it much faster but let's see. I can't wait for Cotto to have the chance to shock the world!

I agree... I don't understand why he can't make his money and at the same time fight the best out there... I know boxers that have a high pay rate and still make the way to go after the best ones out there...

FELIX TRINIDAD!!! THE BOXER WITH THE BIGGEST BALLS THAT I HAVE SEEN!!!

Well, let's see... This guy took a lot of chances while in his prime. Evenfights were he was not the favorite at all.

Oba Car, ODLH, Vargas, B-Hop, Winky, Roy Jones and now there's a word that says a possible match between him and Pavlick or Jermain Taylor. :bbb

That's what bothers me about Floyd... if he only mentions his price let's say $10 or $15 per fight and he will fight anyone then he will be respectied because Aurum will look for the way to pay him his price plus getting him the best figters ever.

Im not going to sit here and rant about how I feel about Floyd Mayweather, he is a great fighter, but I doubt we will ever get to see him fight guys that can bring him into deep waters.

He said " Its not about showing the boxing fans who is the best, its about making smart business decisions that elevate me to the next level."

With a response like that, he will never fight Margo, Margo just doesnt bring enough money to the table. It really is a shame, because I would love to see a welterweight tournament with Mayweather, Cotto, Margarito and Mosley to determine who is the undisputed champ at 147, but that business decision would not be a smart one, so we will see Floyd take on DLH and Hatton until he either retires for real or Cotto can get a big enough fan base to bring floyds kind of money to the table.

I think that people should just accept, even though mayweather is a spectacular fighter with exceptional skills, he wont be fighting any real competitive challenges anytime soon.

You can strip apart any resume out there if you only want to see it the way you want to see it...
