Floyd fans, step in here and defend that SOB for not making weight.

It's just another instance in which people blow things out of proportion to fit their never ending argument that Floyd is a coward. Stop acting like this is the first time this has ever happened. Is it wrong of Floyd to come in overweight?, of course, and anyone who thinks that the extra two pounds means nothing is full of it(otherwise why wouldn't he have just lost the two extra pounds in lieu of loosing all that money). That being said, though yes the two extra pounds is significant, it's just not AS significant as you're (ex. thread starter) making it out to be. This is not the first time a fighter has come in two pounds overweight, but I guarantee this is the most hate anyone will ever receive for it.

coming from a guy who likes both fighters...and just doing the math (not just of this fight but future fights for pbf as well) 600k when you are making 8 figures is a good insurance policy if you want to get an edge and try and further your chances of victory and what will be a HUGE payday against the winner of pac/cotto.

LAS VEGAS – Floyd Mayweather Jr. made the contracted weight of 147 pounds for his HBO Pay-Per-View fight on Saturday with Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

But when Mayweather weighed 146 pounds at Friday’s weigh-in, he was forced to pay a six-figure penalty to Marquez for coming in at more than 144 pounds, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said.

Schaefer said the contract the fighters signed in May was for the bout to be at a limit of 147 pounds. But in that contract, each man agreed to a substantial penalty clause for every pound, or fraction thereof, more than 144.


Mayweather has fought at welterweight since 2005, but Marquez never has and only has fought three times at more than 130. He weighed

134 in a Dec. 9, 1996, bout against Rodrigo Valenzuela. He was 135 when he stopped Joel Casamayor on Sept. 13, 2008, and was 134 when he stopped Juan Diaz on Feb. 28.

On Friday, Marquez weighed 142.

There never was any question whether Marquez could make the weight. It has been more than four years since Mayweather weighed less than 146.

“There were no surprises,” Schaefer said. “The contract the fighters signed for the fight so many months ago called it a welterweight fight. But there was a stipulation that there would be a penalty for weighing over 144.

“Floyd’s team informed us today that he would not be able to make 144, and because of that, there was a substantial penalty. If he would have been 147, it would have been even bigger.”

Thus, Mayweather was in the odd position Friday of making the contracted weight but still paying a penalty.

If either man had weighed in excess of 147, he would have been required to sweat off the excess weight to reach 147 exactly. That is not normally the case unless a fight is for a championship, which Saturday’s fight is not.

Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission, said there was no issue with the weight from a commission standpoint. Kizer said he went to Marquez’s locker room prior to the weigh-in and asked him if he was aware that Mayweather would weigh more than 144.

Kizer said Marquez told him he had no problem with it.

Mayweather also arrived at the MGM Grand about an hour later than the reporting time given to him by the commission.

There is no defense and it aint cool at all. Marquez doesn't seem to care though.

I just love the way that people act as if they know how a fight contract is written up as if they were sitting in the room with the lawyers...They have said all along that it was a welterweight fight, welterweight is 147 not 144. It appears that the only thing about weight was that they would pay for every pound over 144...Cotto should learn from Mayweather and put his foot down in the Pac fight. I would love to see Cotto do the very same thing, take the hit and fight at the weight you comfortable at. Force them to fight or back out....JMM has balls in taking the fight in the first place, and moreso for agreeing to do so knowing that Floyd could, if he wanted to come in at 147. Pac could learn something from JMM and that is stop trying to put fighters at a huge disadvantage at the table hoping that it would make them easy picking in the ring.

On the flip side it just adds another excuse for the fight if Mayweather wins.

 

I think the emphasis is because Marquez is by far the smaller guy in the first place. Marquez is used to weighing in at 130 and 135. 135 is the most he's ever weighed in at. Mayweather hasn't weighed in at 135 for many years. He hasn't even had to weigh in at 147 for a couple of years, let alone 144. Floyd would have had to drain himself more than whatever strenuous tasks he already performed just to make 146, and this can be a dramatic difference so close to fight time. HUGE advantage added to the many Floyd already had. Very disappointing. It takes away from the integrity of the competition and the event in general.

i thought they said on 24/7 it was 144......if i was marquez i would make it 147....just because if he was to pull a miracle, it would be even more awsome......and if floyd wins at 147, everybody will downgrade the win, not saying that derogatory way, but no harm done for marquez at 147 if he were to lose...

just make the fight 147.....but I'm pretty sure the contract is 144....
