Apologies if this is old news, but I found it pretty interesting when I randomly stumbled across the quote in this interview, which took place during the Floyd/Marquez buildup:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlRW85c9CNo[/ame]

For people too lazy, this is what he said in response to who he would most want to share the ring with, past or present:

"Aaron Pryor or Pernell Whitaker. Two guys that are legends that don't really get the credit that they truly deserve. People really don't know that Sugar Ray Leonard used to duck Aaron Pryor. And Pernell Whitaker -- he had a chance to share the ring with my uncle Roger...he came up victorious, but it was a close battle. I would have loved to have shared the ring with the great, legendary Pernell Whitaker myself."

I bring this up quite a lot, thanks for posting. One thing that always captures me is when you see genuine admiration from one great to another. And the thing is, Floyd is never humble, this guy sits there telling the world he is better than Sugar Ray Robinson, and then he sits there and basically says he's be priveliged to share the ring with Pernell Whittaker, he must think the world of him.

    **** like this is quality.

This just makes it obviouos that the 24/7 version of Mayweather is not the real one.

Yeah, 24/7 is cringing at times, the super six version seems great, much better for real fans. It's becoming more and more clear lately imo, Mayweather ****s around for promotion purposes, but the man loves boxing.

apparently two guys that Floyd openly shows respect for - are Whitaker and Tzyu, both fought roger- and both have known floyd since he was a kid, and have a long relationship with him. I ve heard Forest whitaker mention Floyd and call him "my boy", and Tzyu also has known floyd for a long time. Boxing is like a brotherhood- they all talk trash in order to sell tickets to us- but they all know each other well- are friendly- and are simply running a business . its a little bit like the WWE outside of the ring- and the sad thing -= is that people fall for it- and choose loyaloties to one fighter- and hate another based off of it- where the two guys are probably good friends in real life. you can see it after fights- theyre all just sharing the dough and laughing- saying hey "we got them on that plotline,". I think too many fans take this way too personal. Ive had people call me a fukwit cos i said floyd has better defense than pernell. way too personal.

Back to whitaker- he s known zab and floyd for a long time- and has been a presence ni both their lives from young. the mayweahers are boxings first family- theyre close with alot of families.

Nice to see PBF give props to two greats who aren't as well known as they should be!

Yep true I remember reading somewhere that for the May vs Oscar fight their teams sat down and decided who was going to be the bad guy (granted it was probably easy to chose PBF) to give the impression that they hated each other, when infact they were friends, but I do think alot of these things are alot more scripted than we are lead to believe!

    ?

The Roger-Whitaker fight was kinda wild with both guys getting decked, the ref getting punched and someone losing his pants though

Amen. People need to face that fact. But they don't want to. They love to hate a successful fighter like Floyd Mayweather Jr. It comes too easy to them to just buy into the way Floyd sells his fights.

The man has a lot of pride and belief in his abilities. A Pryor vs Mayweather Jr. fight would have been great.
