Floyd handled a 164lbs Ortiz easy - so why not just fight mw Martinez?

I'll start by saying - I can't stand Floyd Mayweather.

However, I thought he looked brilliant last night (leaving the whole topic of the ending aside).

His straight right hand was superb again, defence was sweet, reflexes and speed ridiculously good, and looked strong enough and powerful enough to match a bigger, heavier opponent.

Now I've never been in favour of a Mayweather vs Martinez fight before. Sure, if Floyd made Marquez jump 2 weight classes to fight him, he should've been willing to do the same and jump 2 weight classes to fight Martinez. This is true. But I don't think anyone could blame a welterweight for not rushing to fight a guy who weighs 170lbs on fightnight these days.

But given how easily Mayweather coped with Ortiz physically, surely he must now have the belief in himself that he could compete with Martinez?

Unlike others, I believe Mayweather has purposefully avoided difficult challenges in his career. I believe he thought he was unbeatable in his 130 days, and then had that confidence shattered in the 1st Castillo fight where he gave away a lot of weight, and that's why we never got fights with potent physical challenges like Tszyu, Margarito, Cotto, Williams, a younger Mosley, or Pacquiao.

But considering the way Floyd handled a 164lbs man last night, surely he'll start to think the gamble will be worth it vs Martinez? That would be one of the best wins of the past 20 years or so if he could pull it off, a real genuine landmark win of true career-defining greatness.

What do you guys think? Are you in favour of Floyd taking this fight or not?

Because Sergio Martinez is obviously a beast that is too big for Mayweather.

Lou Debella said Martinez is willing to fight Floyd at 164 or under. Not sure what that mean.
But to answer your question, Yes. He proved last night he can hang.. But, business sense it's not the best move. Arum is right to say Martinez is NOT PPV attraction (at least to casual fans). Personally, I would to see this fight.

Victor Ortiz is not a PPV attraction but Floyd fought him. I think Floyd would take Martinez to school at 154 pounds. MW may be too much for Floyd though. Martinez would bring a lot of power at 160.

Floyd's been VERY CAREFUL not to mention Sergio's name. Reporters have been to tied up with a Pacquiao fight to even bring up Sergio.

    To the OP:

Because ORTIZ is a young, stupid, grinning fool of a cub.

And SERGIO is a mean young old lion.

Its one thing beating up bigger guys like Ortiz and bigger punchbags like Margarito

Martinez is a different kettle of fish entirely

There's a reason the two cowards at the top avoid him like the plague

Small correction, Floyd openly called Tszyu and Cotto, the fights didn't happen for multiple reasons.

Pacquiao handled a 165 lb Margo with ease, I guess he should fight Martinez as well.

Mainly this. Floyd would also likely have to carry more weight for the fight, which could potentially hinder him, and obviously, Martinez is a much better fighter than Ortiz.

Not to say Floyd couldn't win, he's too good to be written off against anyone at 160 and below, that's pretty clear. If a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight absolutely can not be made, I'd much rather see either one challenge Sergio than even bother continuing their careers fighting someone else.

 Except he doesn't, obviously. The highest Martinez has ever been on fightnight is 170lbs. Why make **** up? Fail.
